Mole than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third-floor windows. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.

Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles(交通工具) must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to £50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver's responsibility(责任) to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a .seat belt of some kind.

However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing(倒开) your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid(有效) medical certificate (证书) which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these facts request you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. A moment' s drilling by the dentist may make us nervous and upset. Many of us cannot stand pain. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two, we demand the "needle" -- a shot of novocaine (一种局部麻醉) -- that deadens' that nerves around the tooth.

Now it's true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust (适应) to the world. Without our nerves -- and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves -- we wouldn't know what' s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity(敏感). We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of suffering pain is based on the human body being open to pain.

But there is a way to handle pain. kook at the India fakir(苦行僧)who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the minds can deal with pain.

The big thing in withstanding pain in our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, "This will hurt a little," it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation (知觉), we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are part of life.

71. From the passage, the writer seems to tell us _________.

   A. that we needn't pay more attention to pain B. that pain is good for us

  C. how to avoid pain at the dentist's D. how to handle pain

72. The result of pain is to _________.

  A. help us get more sensations B. keep us sensitive

   C. let us know what's going on D. help us change the world

73. The sentence "we pay for our sensitivity" in paragraph 2 most probably means _____.

  A. we suffer because of being sensitive

  B. we are lucky to have developed our senses

  C. our sensitivity costs us a great deal

  D. we have to pay the dentist for his making us sensitive to pain

74. The word "withstanding" in the last paragraph could be best replaced by which of the following?

   A. fighting      B. handling C. suffering D. accepting

75. According to the passage, we should _________ to deal with the pain.

  A. make ourselves less sensitive B. do something to avoid danger

  C. treat it as an interesting sensation D. do what the India fakirs do

W: You're very quiet this evening. What's the matter?

M: Wall, I don't like my job. There's no one to talk to and the days go so slowly.

W: Then what do you plan to do?

M: I intend to work in a hotel.

W: Why a hotel?

M: Well, I can meet all kinds of people from all over the world. Besides, most of the hotels are so beautiful.

W: Do you have any particular hotel in mind?

M: I hope to get a job in Garden Hotel. That's a lovely hotel and it's not far from my home.

W: Then you have to work at night.

M: It doesn't matter, I think.

M: Now, Alice, did you get a good view of the accident?

W: Oh, yes. I was standing outside the bank building and I saw it all quite dearly.

M: Do you know what time it was?

W: Yes, I checked my watch. It was a quarter to three exactly.

M: Good. Now, how fast was the truck moving?

W: Well, quite slowly- about 10 miles an hour. It was coming up Garden Road. I suppose the truck driver knew the lights were going to change. But they were still red when he went over them.

M: I see. What about the car? Was it also driving slowly?

W: It was coming along South Street about 30 miles per hour. It was a blue Toyota. The driver stopped his car when he saw the truck crossing.

M: Where were you this weekend, Bob? I tried to call you.

W: Oh, that's fight. I went out :shopping. I suppose you phoned me in the morning, didn't you?

M: Yes, it was late morning when I phoned.

W: Why did you phone me?

M: Oh, what a pity! I'd love to have come, but actually, Sunday would have been difficult too, because I went on a river trip practically' the whole day. I don't know whether you know the trip.

W: Oh, yes.

M: Well, how did the dinner-party go?

W: Well, we had a wonderful time. I thought you might enjoy it because Tom and his wife were coming. You' ve met them before.

M: Tom, yes, I rather like him.

W: And we had a lovely dinner, one of your favorites, green cabbage, soup and fresh salad.

M: Very nice too.

W: And they talked about you.

M: And how are they getting on?

W: Oh, very well. They were enjoying the party very much.

M: Ah, good.

When the people in far-away parts of Alaska were dying because they did not have the medicine for a throat disease, men decided to get them by dog teams. It was a terrible journey through blinding snow and freezing wind. The driver tied skins about the dogs to keep them warm, but the wind cut through and nearly froze them as they ran. The dogs breathed so much of the icy air that it injured their lungs. But they struggled on until they reached the town with the medicine and saved the people's lives. These dogs were real heroes. Had it been today, the medicine would have been sent in a few hours by plane.
