The train was gradually filled up with peasants travelling to market. And they were ready for the journey, their bags full of bread, cakes and coffee bottles for the twenty miles ahead. Outside the window, we saw fast express buses heading in the same direction as us. They were passing us so quickly that we couldn't even read their destination (目的地) boards. We were not quite reaching Selcut when a very important official entered the compartment and asked to see our tickets. And then clipped (在车票上剪孔) them. He was holding a railway timetable which showed on its cover a coloured photo of a shining truck racing over a long beautiful bridge that carried the railway across a deep valley.

It was 3:15 and raining when we pulled into Selcut. I said“pulled into”because we never actually stopped at Selcut. The train steamed through slowly and passed the end of the platform and then we all threw ourselves out: peasants, soldiers andseveral railway men.

On the platform we had to walk down a road and into the main entrance to get back to the platform. A pretty little girl, the daughter of a local railway official, explained to us in French that the last train back to Iznir left in just twenty-five minutes. That took a load off my mind.

56.In what way were the peasants ready for their trip?

A.They brought goods to sell.

In every school there is “top” crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their lead. Let' s say the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters. Pretty soon everybody is wearing bright red sweaters.

There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact on some people bright red sweater is mighty unbecoming.

The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at seventy miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are endangering (危害) their lives. They are like sheep being led to the slaughter(屠杀).

Now, chances are that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. Chances are that one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying, “Gee, the crowd does it.”Well, let the crowd do it, but don't do it yourself. Learn to say“No”.

Develop your own standards and your own judgment. If you know the crowd is planning something to which you disagree have the courage to bow out (退出) gracefully. You'll have the satisfaction of standing on your own two feet.

59.The best title for this selection is ____.

A.Follow the Leader.

B.The“Top” Crowd.

C.On Being Yourself.

D.Rules for Teens.

Not very long ago, a special family system (n.体系) existed in certain parts of South India. In this system, the actual head of a family unit was the mother' s eldest brother, though the mother also had an important position in the family. In families of this kind, a husband was actually no more than a visitor. He did not live with his wife, but with his own mother, brothers and sisters in another house. He saw his sons and daughters sometimes, but the man who actually fed and cared for them and acted as their father was their uncle-their mother's brother.

But this system, in which brothers and sisters take the place of the father, no longer exists in South India except in a few villages. Economic (adj.经济的) changes have had far-reaching effect on family life. Family life began to change when men went out to work in factories and offices instead of working with their mothers, brothers, and sisters on the land. When a man went out to work he had money of his own and could buy his own land and build his own family, instead of depending on his mother and his brothers. He wanted to be independent (adj. This is an example of the way in which economic relations can have an effect on family relationships.

64.The best title of this passage is ____.

A.Husband Actually Visitor in Family

B.Family System in South India

C.Wife Has Important Position in Family

D.Economic Relations Affects Family Relationships

65.Who had the actual control of a family in South India not long ago?

A.his wife

B.his sons and daughters

C.his mother, brothers and sisters. D .his wife's brother

67.Now in South India there are ____.of this system in which a husband has no control of his family.

A.no families

B.many more families

C.very few families

D.not any families

China' s giant panda shows the achievement of the international effort to save animals that are now in danger. In television programmes we often see pandas playing funny. Children have panda toys and beautiful cards with pictures of lovely pandas playing funny games. Children have panda toys and beautiful cards with pictures of lovely pandas in them. They often visit the giant pandas in the zoo on their holiday and have a good time there.

However, scientists are worried about the future of giant pandas, They know only about 1, 000 giant pandas remain alive today. They think the giant panda will die out in 30 years of the present conditions are not improved.

It is reported that the giant pandas have a very low birthrate (出生率). About 115 pandas live in zoos and research centres mainly in China, but during the past 10 years they produced only 34 young pandas that are still alive. Survival rate (出生率) for giant pandas in the wild are probably the same or lower.

There are several reasons for the low birthrate. The main reason is hat male (雄性) pandas can make love with females(雌性) in a very short season----only a few days a year. When they do have babies, females often produce two pandas , but the mother is usually not able to care for both of them. The newborn pandas weigh only a few grams each. They are too weak to live without special care. In the zoo, scientists can help the mothers care for the young pandas, but those living in the wild do not get enough help. It is very difficult for mother pandas to bring up their young pandas.

Conditions for the giant pandas have been worse in recent years. Pandas in China continue to reduce in number. We know pandas live on bamboos. But sometimes all the bamboos in one area die. The pandas there have nothing to eat and die of hunger.

Giant pandas now live in 13 separate protected areas in China. Several years ago the Chinese government and the International Wild Life Organization agreed on a project (计划) of protecting giant pandas in the wild. We hope it could be helpful.

68.A ccording to this passage we know most of the giant pandas live ____.

A.in the wild all over the world

B.in the zoos and research centres

C.in the area where there are plenty of bamboos for them to eat

D.in thirteen separate protected areas in our country

69.Scientists are worried about the future of the giant pandas because ____.

A.sometimes all of the bamboos die in the area where the giant pandas live and they have nothing to eat

B.giant pandas that still live in the wild can not get enough help from humans

C.only a small number of giant pandas remain alive today and their birth rate is too low

D.male and female giant pandas often refuse to make love in the right season

70.The low survival rate of young giant pandas has much to do with the fact that ____.

A.mother pandas are usually unable to care for both young pandas born

B.female pandas are able to have baby pandas only in a special time

C.male and female pandas often refuse to have babies in the right time

D.young pandas weigh only a few grams each

71.If the present conditions are not improved, giant pandas in the world will disappear ____.

A.in less than a few yeas

B.in several years

C.in the twenties next century

D.in the thirties next century

24.A to death,to指结果,还有:hang to death,sentence to death,freeze to death等。

25.C no matter和B、C混用是错的。what,不能修饰副词,故用how,no matter how=however.

27.A when they were young表明,“他们是朋友”一事发生在豆I know之前,故应使用完成不定式。

28.A

30.C look forward to是一短语,其中to为介词,故排除A、B。

This book is the one (that) I bought…

32.A had been running表示在你见到我之前一直在跑,产生的结果是was tired。

35.B since then on,“从那时起”,用完成时。

36.A

44.A

47.A answer a call“回电话”。

49.A knock at“敲门”。

Nowadays travelling on holidays has become a fashion in China with the development of economy. When the demands on food, clothes and some other necessities of life become far beyond being satisfied, people have come to spend their extra money on travelling. Travelling has many advantages. Firstly, it provides opportunities for people to tasts strange food and to know novel customs that they otherwise would not know. Secondly, through travelling, one may make friends along the way. Thirdly, in travelling, people can broaden their horizon, enrich their experience of life and expand their scope of knowledge, especially of geography and history. However, travelling also has some disadvantages. For example, perilous peaks and furious rapids may endanger travellers' lives. Accommodations and bad weather trouble travellers a lot.

On the whole, I think travelling does more good than harm. Those so-called disadvantages can even be regarded as good conditions, inwhich travellers can build up both physical strenghth and will power. If both your finance and health permit, you might as well do some travelling from time to time. Perhaps an exotic atmosphere and charming scenes can attract you so much that you even forget to return.
