第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题; 每小题2分, 满分40分)

(A)
I'm sure I'm not the only person my age(15) who hates going to the dentist. Channel 4's late night documentary(纪录片) Open wide last Tuesday was excellent for people like me. However, none of my school friends watched it because they didn't know it was on. Why can't television companies let us know about such important programmes in advance?
This programme was important because it showed how methods for helping people with toothache have developed over the centuries. If you think visiting the dentist today is an uncomfortable experience, just be grateful you didn't live 200 years ago! Then, the programme told us, the only cure for toothache was removing the tooth. There weren't any dentists, so the person who cut your hair also pulled out your bad teeth, and there was nothing to stop you feeling the pain.
The programme has also completely changed my attitude to looking after my teeth. My parents were always saying to me things like, ‘Don't eat too many sweets,’ and, ‘Brush your teeth after meals,’ but I never paid much attention. Now I've seen what damage sugar can do, especially if I don't use a toothbrush regularly. I'm going to change my habits. Many people would benefit from a repeat of this programme.
Sophie Ashley, Oxford

The most difficult thing for university student Shaun Rogers is opening his classroom door. Shaun can't do this without help because he's only six years old. He's the youngest person ever to study at Rochester University in New York. Shaun began reading at two, by the age of five he was regularly corresponding(通信) with university professors and will shortly complete his first book .‘I love learning, ’says Shaun. ‘My hero is the scientist Albert Einstein because he never combed his hair or wore socks.’
Psychologists(心理学家) have found it difficult to test Shaun's intelligence(智力) because it goes beyond what they usually measure. Shaun's mother first realized her son was different when he kept crying at playschool because he was bored with the children's games. She started teaching him at home after finding that local schools were not prepared for children who learnt at Shaun's speed. Now Shaun is studying geography at Rochester University and using the Internet to complete his high school studies.
However, some psychologists warn that too much study can prevent a child from developing normally. ‘I don't care how brilliant the kid is, sixyearolds have to play with their friends,’ says Dr Brian Wood. Mrs Rogers disagrees that her son's time is completely taken up by school work. ‘He loves the violin and has many outdoor interests, such as camping, fishing and swimming, just like other boys of his age.’
61.The writer of the text is trying to___________________.

  B. compare the development of normal and clever children
  C. encourage students to enter university at a young age
  D. interest people in the life of an unusual child

  D. how well Shaun plays the violin
63.What does Dr Wood think about Shaun?
  A. He isn't really any cleverer than other sixyearolds.
  B. He should spend more time having fun with other children.
  C. He will have to study harder to succeed at university.
  D. He can help his friends to do better at school.
64.Which of these is Mrs Rogers’ talking about Shaun?
  A. “My son gets bored easily if he doesn't have other children to play games or go swimming

with him.”
  B. “My son loves his studies and fortunately there are many children of his own age in

his class who share his interests.”
  C. “What makes my son different from other children is that he started studying earlier and

learns things much more quickly.”
  D. “Like most young boys, my son often looks untidy and spends more time using

the Internet than doing his homework.”

Six months have passed since Saddam Hussein's rule of Iraq was declared over, but in many ways the war is still being fought.
Groups opposed to American control of Baghdad have launched a series of suicide bombings across the city. Last Monday around 40 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the bloodiest day since peace was announced on May 1. One bomb even attacked the headquarters (总部) of the International Red Cross.
Dr Jalal F Massa, a doctor whose daughter was injured in the attack on the Red Cross, said: "We, the Iraqi people, who have suffered so much, feel helpless when we see these things. The US occupation has not been a success."
In the last three months, there have been several attacks in Iraq causing heavy damage. Not only were US troops targeted, but also UN buildings and workers, religious (宗教的) leaders, foreign officials and members of Iraq's new government.
On October 28, the number of US soldiers who have died in Iraq since May 1 rose to 139, one more than the number who died during the war itself.
Paul Bremer, the US chief administrator (行政长官) in Iraq, told the Iraqi people the US didn't like being an occupying power and promised they would only stay as long as is necessary.
Although, there is transitory government in Iraq, it is controlled by the US and there is no timetable for handing over power to the Iraqis. Many other countries, including France, Germany and Russia, see this as a key part to rebuilding the country.
"Only in this way can it be made clear that the present political situation in Iraq is a temporary (暂时的) one," said Gunter Pleuger, Germany's Ambassador (大使) to the UN. Although the UN has agreed to help rebuild the country, it remains divided over what its role should be. While the likes of France and Germany want to see a quick hand-over of power, the US and Britain focus more on removing rebel forces still supporting Saddam.

Rosemary Hollis, of the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, said that whatever the US-led troops choose to do, they must act quickly. "If they do not move soon, they will lose control and there will not be any new government to put in power," she warned. "They will be stuck, as happened to America after the war in Viet Nam (越南)."

65.Which of the following is NOT one of the disagreements over rebuilding Iraq?
 A. Whether the US occupation has been a success.
 B. Setting a clear date for the handover of power to Iraq.
 C. Whether the UN should take the leading role in rebuilding Iraq rather than the US.
 D. Removing the rebel forces that still support Saddam.
66. What is the main idea of this story?
 A. Baghdad saw the bloodiest day since peace was declared on May 1.
 B. The US occupation has not been a success.
 C. The rebuilding of Iraq mainly depended on UN’s decision.
 D. There are still many disagreements over how to rebuild Iraq.
67. Which shows the war is still going on?
 A. The number of US soldiers who have died in Iraq.
 B. The attack on the International Red Cross headquarters.
 C. The US troops are still in Iraq.
 D. All the above.
68. The writer of this story is ____.
 A. on the American side
 B. on the French side
 C. on the Iraqi side
 D. very objective (客观的)

(D)

Customs Officers are quite tolerant these days, but they can still stop you when you are going through the Green Channel and have nothing to declare. Even really honest people are often made to feel guilty. The hardened professional smuggler, on the other hand, is never troubled by such feelings, even if he has five hundred gold watches hidden in his suitcase. When I returned from abroad recently, a particularly officious young Customs Officer clearly regarded me as a smuggler.

‘Have you anything to declare? ’ he asked, looking me in the eye.

‘No, ’ I answered confidently.

‘Would you mind unlocking this suitcase please? ’

‘Not at all, ’ I answered.

The Officer went through the case with great care. All the things I had packed so carefully were soon in a dreadful mess. I felt sure I would never be able to close the case again. Suddenly, I saw the Officer's face light, up. He had spotted a tiny bottle at the bottom of my case and he pounced on it with delight.

‘Perfume, eh? ’ he asked sarcastically. ‘You should have declared that. Perfume is not exempt from import duty. ’

‘But it isn't perfume, ’ I said. ‘It's hair gel. ’ Then I added with a smile, ‘It's a strange mixture I make myself. ’

As I expected, he did not believe me.

‘Try it!’I said encouragingly.

The Officer unscrewed the cap and put the bottle to his nostrils. He was greeted by an unpleasant smell which convinced him that I was telling the truth. A few minutes later, I was able to hurry away with precious chalk marks on my baggage.

69. What makes really honest people feel guilty when going through Customs?

A.Having five hundred gold watches hidden in their suitcases.

B.The particularly officious way Customs Officers always ask questions.

C.The fact that they are treated as potential smugglers.

D.Carrying things which are not exempt from import duty.

70. What made the Customs Officer's face light up?

A.Knowing how difficult it would be for the writer to close his case.

B.Seeing the bottle of hair gel which he could charge duty on.

C.The idea of having found something which should have been declared.

D.Discovering an unopened bottle of perfume at the bottom of the case.

71. The writer was in a hurry to get away because ______ .

A.he had grown impatient at having taken so long to get through Customs

B.he was anxious to get away from the unpleasant smell

C.he was afraid he might still be stopped for smuggling

D.he was trying to escape with precious chalk marks

The science of physics today is as current as the morning newspaper. Indeed, as a result of new advances in physics and their rapid application to inventions designed to satisfy man’s wants. The world itself has been changing rapidly. Space technology, industrial technology, and the technology of the home, the farm, the office, the bank, and the department store have all been revolutionized.

Clearly, every grown-up today would understand the world he lives in much better if he knew something about physics. Whether it be Congress (美国国会) voting huge sums of money for new warships, space exploration, or atomic energy; the office staff learning to use a new computer; son Bobby wanting to know about going to the moon; or the housewife learning to operate a new electric stove, physics seems to be everywhere.

Teachers in thousands of schoolrooms in America are trying to communicate some of the excitement and importance of these new developments to their students. They know that some of their eager students will someday be scientists and will themselves then contribute (贡献) to the development of new knowledge or its application to new things.

But in any case, they can be sure that if they bring a knowledge of science (any science) to their students in meaningful and stimulating ways, they have contributed much to helping each one live a more meaningful life.

72. The application of new advances in physics to inventions____________________.

A. may solve all the problems in teaching

B. can help people understand the meaning of life

C. is intended to meet people’s needs

D. makes people understand the voting rules of the Congress.

73. According to the passage, many American teachers are making efforts to do all of the following EXCEPT________________.

A. stimulating their students’ curiosity in physics

B. making their students understand the importance of physics

C. giving their students the information of new advances in science

D. creating excitement about physical education among their students

74. The word “themselves” in the third paragraph refers to_______________.

A. some of the eager students

B. the students in the classroom

C. the teachers giving lessons

D. all the scientists in physics

75. The first two paragraphs of the passage mainly tell us about_____________.

A. new advances in physics

B. the use of physics in our life

C. the science of physics

D. modern developments in science

April 14th, 2003, Sunday               Rainy

Today I took part in the work for the “ Anti-SARS”. I was working in Wang Fujing Street for eight hours in the rain. My job was to explain how to keep ourselves from being infected and hand out some medicine to the passers-by. The job was trifling but very important.

I feel very proud of being a volunteer at this very time and decide to be an excellent doctor in the future.
