H5N1 avian influenza, known commonly as bird flu, has killed at least 15 people acrca~ Asia
and was confirmed in China on January 27. No human cases have been found in the mainland but,
13 of the country's 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities(直辖市) have reported
the disease in poultry.
The Chinese government has taken measures to prevent and control the disease. Poultry with-
in 3kin of infected farms is to be killed and those within 5km vaccinated(进行接种疫苗). Mean-
while, there will be constant monitoring and daily reports on the disease across the country, and
increased production of bird flu vaccines.
Among the 11 Asian countries and regions affected by bird flu in animals, only Viet Nam and
Thailand have reported human cases. The people infected were reported to have caught the disease
from poultry. While the World Health Organization (WHO)said there is "no proof of human-to- human transmission(传播) of bird flu.
The big fear is that the disease could combine with a human influenza, a virus(病毒) to create a
deadly new disease that will kill millions of people across the globe. Many Asian farmers live closely with their animals and sell live chickens in the market. This greatly increases the possibility of
humans being infected with bird flu.
A spokesman of the WHO said that Asian countries affected by bird flu should introduce a
more healthy way of raising and selling chickens. And the people there have to completely change
their lifestyle and attitude towards animals. Here are some safety measures for people to stay
healthy:

Until the 1960' s, almost everyone in the U. S. followed tradition and gave all the children in
the same family the same last name or surname, as it is called. But during the 60 's, young parents
began giving their children strange names-names like Moonglow, Eternal Peace, and Sun-
shine. Some states passed laws controlling the names that parents could use. But after a court case
in 1981, a federal judge ruled that parents are free to give any surnames they wish to their children.
So, for the last few decades, more parents are not giving their children the family's surnames. Some insist that while it's OK for a boy to have the father's family name, a girl should
have the mother' s family name. Thus, Philip Gaylord and Pan Zimmitti could be brother and sister. Some parents think that using family surname is old-fashioned and boring. One couple gave
their son the last name Sue because they like the Johnny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue." And
finally, some parents think that giving their children different surnames is just a "neat thing to
do". So the first son of a New York family has the last name Washington-Lincoln, after the two
famous presidents. The daughter has the last name Anthony-Tubman after two women who
fought for women's rights.
This change in naming customs presents two problems. First, if each person in the family has
a different last name, family records will be very confusable. It will be hard to track a person's
family, and record keeping will be difficult. Second, son. e psychologists( 心理学家 ) are afraid
that different surnames will threaten family unity. Since names have an important effect on one's
identity(身份), they think brothers arid sisters will not feel connected if they have different last
names.
So this problem of names will get worse as new and different last names increase. Get ready
to meet Welcome Baby Darling, sister of Aren't We Glad You're Here and It's About Time.
651 In America, to give children different surnames these days.
A. it is allowed by the law B. it breaks the law
C. it is one of the customs D. it is unusual
66. In the second paragraph of the passage a "neat thing to do" means .
A. a good thing to do B. a terrible thing to do
C. a dirty thing to do D. a clean thing to do
,67. According to some psychologists, the different last names will let brothers and sisters feel they
are
A. enemies B. as close as before C. good fiends D. separated
68. From the last paragraph, we can see the author this change in naming customs.
A. is for B. is against C. doesn' t care D. doesn' t notice

King Tut, named Tutankhamen, lived during the 18th Dynasty ( 155ff- 1295BC) of ancient
Egypt. He was only 19 when he'died, perhaps murdered by his enemies. After his death, his
successors (继承者) removed his name from all official records even those carved in stone. It is
said that a curse (袓咒)was carved on his tomb, which translates as: "Death shall come on swift
wings to him who disturbs the peace of the king'""
In the 19th century, many explorers from Europe and America wanted to find the mummi-
fied bodies of Pharaohs kings of ancient Egypt. They had heard stories of the Pharaohs being
buried with treasures of great artistic and scientific value.
But when King Tut was discovered in 1922 in Egypt they realized the Pharaohs might have
been buried with something else as well -- curses.
As soon as Englishman Howard Carter found King Tut' s tomb, strange things started to
happen.
On the night of the discovery Carter’s canary(金丝雀)was killed by a snake. It was the
same kind of snake found on a symbol worn by the Pharaohs on their foreheads.
A few months later, Lord Carnarvon, the man who paid for Carter's trip, died suddenly in
Cairo of unknown causes. By 1935, no fewer than 21 people connected with the discovery of the
tomb had died.
After much argument over whether the curse of King Tut really existed, four years ago German scientist Gotthard Kramer tried to find out for certain. He discovered that bacteria (细菌) on
the mummy could have been responsible for the deaths. "When this bacteria enters the body
through the nose, mouth or eyes," Kramer said, "it cam result in illness or even death, particular-
ly to those with bad health."
But perhaps the power of the curse is in the mind of those who believe it. Carter, the man
who actually opened the tomb, lived to 66 before dying of natural causes.
69. Why was King Tut's name removed from all records ?

Millions of people die of hurdler in southern Africa every year, but when Zambia was offered
thousands of tons of free maize by the US, the government politely said no.
"We don't know whether the food is safe~', said Zambia's Commerce, Trade and Industry
Minister Dipak Patel.
His worries are shared by countries around the world that doubt about America genetically
modified (GM,转基因 ) crops. Just last week, ELI member nations were discussing whether or
not to import GM sweet corn from the US.
Ever since people started farming ,they have tried to crossbreed (杂交) plant to make them
stronger or better tasting. At one time, only related plants could be crossed with each other.
But when GM techniques were developed in the 1970s, scientists were able to put a single
gene from a living creature into an unrelated creature.
This means they can make crops more productive and resistant to disease by adding genes
from other species. They can also Create food with special characteristics, such as "golden rice",
which is enriched with vitamin A. But many people believe GM foods are a health risk.
At the moment, the official argument is that GM foods "are not likely to present risks for
human health". But there are still many questions to be answered as the foods are produced in
different ways.
Some experts believe the genetic material added to plant can transfer to humans and damage
our bodies. Further harm could be caused by the genes from GM plants crossbreeding with
naturally produced crops.
People in China are also getting worried about GM foods. More than 70 per cent of the country's soybean oil is produced from imported GM soybeans. Meanwhile, an investigation last
November found that 12 out of 60 famous food brands (品牌) sold across the country were GM
products. The government has begun to introduce a labeling system for GM foods so that
consumers can choose whether or not they eat them.
73. Why has Zambia refused the American free maize?
A. They are too proud to accept free offer.
B, They worry about the safety of GM food.
C. Their problem of starvation is not serious.
D. They decide to follow EU members' advice.
74. It has been proved that
A. GM foods are harmful to people's health
B. GM foods are better than naturally produced foods
C. only related plants could be crossed with each other
D. GM techniques can increase the production of crops
75. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. GM Foods in China
B. Advantages of GM Foods
C. GM Foods, A Health Risk?
D. The Development of GM Techniques

Recently I've had an interview with some experts and university students about their
opinions on job choosing.
The students have different opinions. Most of them want to find a well-paid job while a few
of them want to be self-employed/start their own business. However, some of them are not in a
hurry to hunt for jobs but waiting for better chances. Toward this point of view, .the experts warn
that it might be more difficult to find a satisfactory job next year. They advise the graduates to
find a regular, full-time 'lob as quickly as possible so that they can earn money to support them-
selves/earn a living and get working experience, which will help to find a better position later.
