INFLUENZA outbreaks continue to move across the US, with the disease appearing in 36 states, up from 24, in early December 2003. The official count for child flu deaths has more than doubled since last week, from 20 to 42, by Monday. It hasn't reached the whole country, but experts warn that the case is coming, it's just a question of when. "For the American public in particular, I think it will be horrific," said Greg Poland of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

There have been three in the past 100 years, in 1918, 1957 and 1968. There's no way to tell in advance when the next one will appear, but the pattern does make experts think. It's all up to a virus(病毒) that is variable and hard to tell, constantly changing its genetic (基因) makeup, said William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, US.

There's plenty to be nervous about. It's considered that in the industrialized nations alone, the next one is likely to send 1 million to 2.3 million people to the hospital and kill 280,000 to 650,000, according to the World Health Organization. New worries of the flu virus will get their start in the countryside of Asia. That is where the various strains (病种) hit chickens, other birds, pigs and humans. People have no natural defense against new viruses.

China has not been hit by the flu outbreak. According to Liu Zejun, director of Beijing's Disease Control Centre, the number of Beijing flu case is about the same as that of last year and the viruses recently found here are quite different from those in the US. In addition, experts said that good living habits could prevent the outbreak of flu. For example, we should pay attention to our eating habits, do more exercise and change clothing as the weather changes.

56.Which of the following can be the title of the passage?

A. The Official Count for Child Flu Deaths

B. Influenza Outbreaks in the USA

57.Which of the following is TRUE according to William Schaffner?

A. Only 3 times have the flu outbreaks taken place by now.

B. Experts are sure to find a way to foresee the next outbreak.

C. The flu outbreaks happened only during the past 100 years.

D. The changing of genetic makeup makes it difficult to tell the next outbreak

58.It can be inferred from the passage that ________ .

A. if the flu breaks out in the countryside in Asia, things will be more serious

B. people in the countryside of Asia have never suffered the disease:

C. China will never be hit by the flue like that in the USA

D. the Chinese good eating habits can prevent the disease

                     B

The Europeans wanted colonies(殖民地) for several reasons. Respect was one reason - people felt proud that their country owned a share of Africa. A more important reason was trade. In Africa there are many different kinds of valuable things. There are coconuts and cocoa, all kinds of fruits and ivory,. A colony was valuable to all industrial country if it could supply raw materials like cotton, or minerals like iron ore, copper or gold. For very low wages the native workers dug out the minerals and grew the crops, which were shipped to British factories. Some

of the goods from these raw materials were sold back to the colonies, which were always good markets.

Look at the map and you will see which European countries had colonies. Germany took Togoland (now Togo) in1884 and lost it to Britain after World War I. Britain had the largest and richest share, while France owned most of northern Africa including the Sahara Desert. France and Britain were always great rivals, each trying to extend its colonies.

France meant to have a solid block of Africa from the Atlantic to the Red Sea. The British wished to have a solid land from the Nile in Egypt to the Cape in South Africa. Both countries sent expeditions to claim southern Sudan. The French, having crossed the Sahara from Gabon, reached the Upper Nile at Fashoda and raised the French flag. The British arrived eight days later. There was no battle, but the British took Sudan, through an agreement with the French Government. In 1956 Sudan became an independent republic.

New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has become smaller. It's now a "global village" where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communication equipment is greatly gained by foreign language skills.

Deeply involved with this new technology is a kind of modem businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support home business efforts.

Overseas assignments (委派) axe becoming more and more important. The assignments in another country no longer need fear being "out of sight and out of mind." He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company's plan for success, and that promotions (提拔) often follow an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, employers will have greater confidence in his or her ability to work back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language problems are becoming more and more common.

Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communication means with business purposes, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets.

English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn't generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives an employee the advantage when other qualifications appear to be equal.

The employee posted abroad who speaks the country's main language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain business talks, and can have the cultural knowledge to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign clients('代理人) over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious value skill to the firm

Research shows that parents who reward self-control and independence mean to have children with high achievement motivation(动力).
