LEEDS,England—A Leeds University psychology(心理学)professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies.

“The hatred(strong dislike)we hold within us is a cancer,”Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart's first 20-week workshop in London—a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

“These are people who are sick and tired of living with the memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out,but they end up drinking it themselves,”said Canadian-born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for two-hour workshop with a visit to an adviser every night.

The course, ending in July,is expected to get rid of the cancer of hatred in these people.

“People have lots of wrong attitudes towards forgiveness,”he said.“People can't tell forgiveness from forgetting.”

“Forgiveness is something of changing from a wrong attitude to a right one.”

Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.

“The main idea is to give your guidelines on how to look at various dangers that affect you,and how to change your attitude toward the person you are angry with,”said Norman Claringbull,a senior expert on the forgiveness project.

AMERICAN scientists have a new definition(定义)of a good night's sleep—go to bed late and get up early.Insomniacs(患失眠症的人)may not be harmed by theiy short nights. But those who sleep like logs for eight hours or more could be heading for an early grave.

The origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza,Egypt goes back 5 000 years.Although many Sphinx sculptures have been found over the years, researchers believe that the Great Sphinx which guards the pyramids in Giza was actually the first Sphinx to be made.It stands 20 meters (66 feet) tall and is 73 meters (240 feet)long. The head of the Sphinx represents Khafre, the Pharaoh who ruled Egypt in the 26th century B.C. Historians suspect that an unknown sculptor carved the Sphinx from a giant block of limestone that was left over after the construction of the Pyramids. The block of limestone got in the way of the view of the Pyramids, but it was much too heavy to move.Instead of trying to remove the giant stone, the sculptor carved it into a monument to Khafre.

About 2 000 years later, around 570 B.C., sand had covered all but the head of the Great Sphinx. The people living in the area had forgotten the history of the statue,so they imagined that the head represented the sun god Ra and began worshiping it.The son of Pharaoh Amenhotep Ⅱ heard the head speak to him in a dream. The Sphinx's head told him to clear the sand from the statue's body. The son,Thutmose, did as he was told in the dream, and he also built walls around the statue to prevent the sand from covering it again. After all of the sand was cleared away,Thutmose made a large stone tablet which told the story of his dream. He placed this tablet between the two front feet of the Sphinx. The tablet may still be seen today.

For hundreds of years, the Sphinx attracted people both as a religious monument and as a work of art.But eventually, the desert sand once again covered the Sphinx, leaving only the head visible. Then,in the 1300s,a religious man named Saim-el-Dahr ordered that the head of the Sphinx be destroyed because it represented a false god.The nose of the Sphinx was broken off,and the face of the statue was damaged. It was not until the 1800s that archeologists began clearing the sand from the statue and began researching the long history of the Sphinx. At last,in the 1920s all of the sand was finally cleared away and small changes were made to the Great Sphinx in order to fix it up. Special pieces of stone were added to the head of the statue in order to keep the head from falling.

OPEC Decides Not to Increase Production

Vienna—In spite of Iraq's decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11-nation organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC) will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided Tuesday in Vienna.

The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization's president,Chakib Khelil of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable,so quota(配额)increases were not necessary.

The E.U.Commission has expressed concern about Iraq's output stop.A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.

Saudi Arabia's Oil Minister Ali Al-Nuaimi had earlier said there would not be any shortage of oil in the market. The organization had already taken steps to fill the gap,he said. OPEC Secretary General Ali Rodriguez added that the period of the Iraq stop to exports was not known,so other exporters were not going to lift quotas yet.If the market was destabilized (动摇的), a suitable response could be made.

Iraq on Monday stop shipments of crude oil to protest against the U.N.Security Council's decision to extend the oil-for-food programme by only a month, instead of the normal six-month renewal(延期).

Just before the Vienna meeting, oil prices had gone up,with a barrel of OPEC crude selling for 27.05 dollars,up from 26.81 dollars last Friday.North sea oil was at 29.26 dollars Monday evening.

OPEC wants the oil price to stay within a margin of 22 to 28 dollars and achieved that with cuts in January and March that reduced 2.5 million barrels per day off quotas.

书面表达:

River pollution as China Daily reports exists not only in Haihe River but also in some other places of our country.

As we all know, environmental pollution does great harm to human beings. Now more and more people have come to realize how serious this problem is.

Our government is doing its best to take measures to fight against pollution. We've done a good deal of work, but there's still a long way to go.We must keep on fighting until we find ways to protect the environment from being polluted, and do away with pollution. We are sure that we'll win the battle.
