  Getting a new PC is one thing. Keeping it running smoothly is quite another. While a personal computer should continue to perform well for years, users know that system unsteadiness does exist. Yet you can reduce it to the smallest amount by following the tips below.

  First, put in as little software as possible. You'll have fewer software-related problems and a system that is easier to manage.

  Second, you should ensure that you have as much memory (RAM) in your PC as you need. If you run Windows 98, your computer should have at least 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or more. You can also get by with 128 MB of RAM if you use Windows NT or Windows 2000, but these operating systems will run much more smoothly if you have 256 MB of RAM or more.

  Third, make sure you buy good hardware. No-name products may be cheaper and sometimes just as good as named-brand products, but named-brand products usually became well-known because of their steadiness. It's wise to buy products from famous companies because Windows will more often support the hardware that you buy. If you are starting out with computers, it's also a good idea to buy ready-made systems from major manufacturers.   A man steps on what seems like solid ground but discovers with horror that the ground is giving way beneath his feet. The man struggles desperately, but he is trapped. He cannot escape.    It is said that mathematics is the base of all other sciences, and that arithmetic (算术), the science of numbers, is the base of mathematics. Numbers are formed by the digits 0,1,2.3,4,5,6,7,8,and 9 and by combinations of them. For example, 247 , two hundred and forty seven, is a number formed by three digits. More specialized extensions, such as probability theory and group theory, are now applied to an increasing number of activities, ranging from economics and the design of experiments to war and politics.

W: I sent some work that her father can help her with at home. But what about you? You're here late too.

M: Oh, I was doing the usual things--correcting homework and making out lesson plans.

W: Well, let's go now. It's been a long day.

M: Hello. Are you the person who has a house for sale?

W: Yes. I am.

M: Well, the advertisement says that it has four bedrooms and three baths, just what I need for my family of six. May I ask how much you want for it?

W: I prefer not to talk about the price over the phone, but let's say it's around $150 000. I would also require $ 40 000 to be paid at the time of buying. Why don't you come by and take a look?

M: Well, I'm not sure I can afford such as large payment of $ 40 000 at once. But I guess it wouldn't be hard to see the house. If you can tell me how to get to your place from South Florida Street, my wife and I will be over.

M: I'd been feeling pretty well until just the last few days.

M: I feel tired. I've been having headaches almost every day. And I'm not getting as much sleep as I usually do.

W: Have you been eating properly? Eating the right kind of food is important for your health, you know.

M: Well, I haven't been eating too well, I guess. I usually have enough time to eat a sandwich and a cup of coffee for lunch.

W: And what about dinner?

M: Sometimes I'm too tired to eat anything at all.

W: That's not good. How're things going at work?

M: Oh, pretty well. I've been given a rise. It's been necessary for me to work late almost every night.

W: Working late and worrying aren't good for you. It's important for you to eat properly and to get enough sleep. Getting some exercise will help you to sleep better.

M: Yes. I suppose so.

W: And I will give you some medicine to take. Remember that you have to be careful about eating.

   I've been in England for three months now. I hope you don't think that I've forgotten you. There are so many things to do and so many places to see that I've not had much time for writing letters. I'll soon start my studies at King's College. So far I've been learning about England and Britain as well as ways of living. I won't tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I'm sure you'll be interested to know what I think

about life here.

   I found some of the customs new and interesting. People here don't shake hands as much as we do in Asia. During the first few weeks, I was often surprised because people don't put out their hands when I met them. Men raise their hats to women but not to each other.
