It was a beautiful day at the beach—blue sky, gentle wind, calm sea. I knew these things because a man sitting five feet from me was shouting them into his mobile phone, like a play-by –play announcer (实况解说员).

“IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY,” he shouted. “THE SKY IS BLUE, AND THERE’S A GENTLE WIND, AND THE WATER IS CALM, AND…”

Behind me, a woman, her mobile phone pressed to her ear was walking back and forth.

“She DIDN’T,” she was saying. “No. She DIDN’T. She DID? Really? Are you SERIOUS? She did NOT. She DID? No she…”

And so on. This woman had two children, who were playing in the sea. I found myself watching them, because the woman surely was not. A huge squid could have caught and snatched the children, and this woman would not have noticed. Or, if she had noticed, she’d have said, “Listen. I have to go, because a huge squid just……No! She didn’t ! She DID? No! She……”

And next to me, the play-by-play man would have said: “…AND A HUGE SQUID JUST ATE TWO CHILDREN, AND I’M GETTING A LITTLE SUNBURNED, AND …”

It used to be that the major trouble at the beach was the fellow who brought a boom box (便携式录音机) and turned it up so loud that the bass notes caused seagulls to explode. But at least you knew where these fellows were; you never know which beachgoers have mobile phones. You’ll settle next to what appears to be a sleeping sunbather, or even (you hope) a corpse , and you’ll lie happily on your towel, and you’ll get all the way to the second sentence of your 467-page book before you fall asleep to the hypnotic surge of the surf (催人入梦的潮声), and …

BREEP! BREEP! The corpse sits up, feels urgently for its mobile phone, and shouts “Hello! I’m at the beach! Yes! It’s nice! Very peaceful! What? She did? No, she didn’t! She DID? No, she…”

Loud mobile-phoners never seem to get urgent calls. Just once, I’d like to hear one of them say, “Hello? Yes, this is Dr. Johnson. Oh, Dr. Smith. You’ve opened the abdominal cavity (腹腔)? Good! Now the appendix should be right under the … What? No, that’s the liver. Don’t take THAT out, ha ha! Oh, you did? My God! OK, now listen carefully…”

64.From the passage we can know that the writer of the passage _____.

B A huge squid ate two children while their mother was not watching

C Some people used to play boom box while spending their holidays at the beach.

D Some people often make loud mobile phone calls without caring for others.

66. The underlined word “ corpse” in this passage has the closest meaning to____.

A. a dead body B a loud mobile phoner C a sound sleeper D a sleep lover

The Attack on September 11th

New York: When the first jet struck 1 World Trade Center at 8:48 am on Tuesday, the people in 2 World Trade Center with a view of the instant damage across the divide had the clearest sense of what they, too, must do: get out first.

Katherine Ilachinski, who had been knocked off her chair by the blast of heat exploding from the neighboring tower, was one of those. Despite her 70 years of age,  Ms Ilachinski, an architect working on the 91st floor of 2 World Trade Center, the south tower, went for the stairs. Twelve floors above her, Judy Wein, an executive (manager), screamed and set off, too.

But others up and down the 110 floors, many without clear views of the damage across the way and thus unclear about what was happening, were not so sure. And the 18 minutes before the next plane would hit were ticking off.

Amid the uncertainty about what was the best thing to do, formal announcements inside the south tower instructed people to stay put, assuring them that the building was sound and the threat was limited to the other tower.

Some left, others stayed. Some began the climb down and, when met with more announcements and other cautions(警告) to stop or return, went back up. The decisions made in those instants proved to be of great importance, because many who chose to stay were doomed(注定死亡) when the second jet crashed into the south tower, killing many and stranding(使某物留在) many more in the floors above where the jet hit.

One of those caught in indecision was the executive at Fuji Bank USA.

Richard Jacobs of Fuji Bank left the 79th floor with the other office workers, but on the 48th floor they heard the announcement that the situation was under control. Several got in the lifts and went back up, two minutes or so before the plane crashed into their floor.

“I just don’t know what happened to them,” Mr. Jacobs said.

68. From the passage, we know that the south tower was hit by the plane _____ .

A. at 8:30 B. 18 minutes earlier than the north tower

C. at around 9:00 D. at 8:48

69. The underlined words “stay put” means _________.

A. stay in the building B. leave at once

C. put everything back and then leave D. keep silent

70. Which floor was hit by the second jet?

A. the 91st floor B.the 103rd floor C. the 60th floor D. the 79th floor

71. Fewer people would have died if __________.

 A. more announcements had been made B. people hadn’t used the lifts

 C. the incident had happened on a weekend D. the people had obeyed the office rules

M:I find listening really hard. Sometimes it's just impossible to understand.

W:Well, you just need a lot of practice .The more you listen to English ,the easier it becomes.

  M:It's easier said than done!

W:Why don' t you buy a radio ? Then you can listen to Radio BBC or VOA English program on the radio.

M:Do you think that would help?

  W:Of course.

  M:That's a good idea.

W:Oh,Well, for that, you'd better find an English pen friend.

M:Thank you for your advice .

7、 M:Let's go in May .It's cheaper then.

W:Yes ,and it's cheaper to go  by train than by plane.

M:Right! And it's easier to get a ticket earlier in summer than later. For Beijing I mean.

W:But I want to go to Guangzhou. It's prettier.

M:Guangzhou is hotte, dirtier and more expensive. Especially the hotels.

W:Well, more expensive hotels are usually more comfortable than cheaper ones. And I can go to visit my old friend ,who lives near the zoo there.

M:But Beijing is much more interesting ,don't you think?

W:No, I certainly do not!

8、M:What a terrible day !

W:Oh , it is ! Never mind! But my dear, will you please help me with the supper?

M:Sure.What can I do?

W:Well,first clean the vegetables.

M:And then...?

W:Um,yes,...cut the patatoes,okay?

M:Fine.

W:But just for now...pour me a drink ,will you?

M:Right .

W:Oh,the door bell is ringing .It must be Mike.

M:Yes ,it's Mike .He has come back form school.

9、M:Would you like to go to the theatre next week when you're in Beijing?

W:Yes ,I'd like to do that.Do you know what's on?

M:Let me have a look...theatres...mmm...Let me see. There's a new film.

That's on the River Side Theatre .

W:What film?

M:It's called See You Tomorrow.

W:I saw it 13 days ago. It's very good and funny.

M:But you wouldn't want to see it again ,would you?

W:No, not particularly ,Is  there anything else?

M:There 's another one called New Century.

W:What's about?

M:I can 't remember .But it's said that some famous actors are in it .

    Dear Tom,

How nice to hear from you again. You want to know what is going on in our school. In short, things have been improving since the school began to carry on exploring study.

In the past, the teachers always kept on explaining the points in class. We students just listened and took notes. But now we often discuss and try to solve the problems raised by the teachers or ourselves. After class, we enjoyed different kinds of activities instead of doing endless homework. For example, we can read what we are interested in. We can go to the library or surf the Internet for various kinds of information.

In a word, we are now masters of study, and we are very happy.

Best wishes,

Li Hua
