Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is sinking into the ground at a rate of six inches per year. Expert predict that if the sinking continues unchecked, the huge metropolis of people will be destroyed. The problem is that several wells have been dug with in the city. According to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (统计) the average weekly income for a woman in 1983 was $ 260. For the same year, men had average weekly earnings of $393. For some people, these figures are clear evidence(证据) that there is still sex discrimination in the area of pay in the U.S. However, I would argue that this explanation is too simple. In order to get an accurate (精确) picture of llie situation, we must examine the types of jobs which are typically help by men and by women. When we do this, we find that certain occupations(职业) seem to be primarily female while others seem to be primarily male occupations. In the medical and legal professions, for example, statistics show that 85 % of all doctors and lawyers are men (although this situation is changing). More than 90% of all engineers are men. Women, however, have been the majority for a long time in other occupations. For example, 99 out of every 100 secretaries are women, and 95% of all nurses are female. From tliese statistics, it is clear that women tend to enter certain occupations and not others. The occupations which they enter are often in service industries and often have one common feature: They do not pay well. It can he argued that this is the principal reason for the difference in earnings between men and women. In addition, we can expect the pay situation to change in the future, because more qualified women are beginning careers (生涯) in medicine, law, business, scientific research, and engineering.

60. What jobs have typically been held by women?

A. Jobs as doctors and lawyers.      B.Johs in service industries.

C.Jobs in areas without sex discrimination. D. Jobs in areas where women are respected.

61. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The majority of people working in medical professions are male.

B. There is still a difference between the earnings of men and women.

C.The difference between men's pay and women's pay will become larger and larger.

D. Women and men will exchange their jobs in most areas.

62. In the opinion of the writer, why do women still earn less money than men?

A. Some professions are not suitable for women.

B.The principle of "equal pay for equal work" isn't observed.

C.It is very difficult to change people's attitude towards the roles of women.

D. Women are often in the majority in low-paying jobs.

63. According to the passage, what can we expect in the legal profession in the future?

A. There will be more male lawyers.      B. The number of female lawyers will rise.

C. The salaries of female lawyers will increase. D.Male and female lawyers will get equal pay.

How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while encouraging them touse the Internet has long been discussed in US.

For some parents the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as hazards and, with good guides, some education and a few precautions(预防措施), the wilds of the Internet can he safely navigated (航行). "Kids have to be on-line. If we tell our kids they can't have access(进入) to the Internet we're cutting them off from their future," said an expert.

Most kids have started to learn to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. But the most popular that was to limit access would be to use what is known as a "content screener(过滤)." But this can't be wholly reliable, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what's OK or not Ok to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing (浏览) the Internet.

  A few other tips:

---Don't put the PC in a child's room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.

---Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.

---Tell your child not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially details like address and phone number.

--And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.

(D)

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said "the phone". Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.

Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?

Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. "The mobile saved my life," says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance to her rescue.

Point3 The mobile removes our privacy. It allows Marketing Manager of Haba Deutseh, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are. where they are going, and how their last meeting went.

Poing 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, "We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near---but we didn't meet for the first two weeks! "

Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously (同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn't know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they're space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access (存取) the Internet, the biggest library on Earth.

68. How do you understand 'Point 1--The telephone creates the need to communicate,...'?

A. People don't communicate without telephone.

B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.

C. People communicate more since telephone has been created.

D. People communicate more because of more traffic.

69. Which of the following best shows people's attitude towards mobile phones?

A. Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency.

B. Mobile phones bring convenience as well little privacy to people.

C. Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.

D. Mobile phones are part of people's life.

70. Which points do you think that support the idea that phones improve people's life?

a.Point 1. b.Point 2. c.Point 3. d.Point 4. e.Point 5.

A.c,d B.a,e C.a,c        D.b,e

71. It is possible to talk to several complete strangers simultaneously through _______.

A. the TV screen              B. a fax machine

C. the phone line hooked up to the computer D.a microphone

Americans do not have a corner on the death market, but many people feel that the United States lends the world with the worst laws.

Taxes are made up of the money which people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.

Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand dollars per year must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal (national) government. The percentage is different from person to person. It depends on his or her salary. The federal government has a two-level income tax; that is, 15 or 28 percent, $17850 is the cutoff. The tax rate is 15 percent below $ 17850 and 28 percent above.

The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which you buy in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a package of gum for twenty-five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in that state, then the cost of the gum is twenty-seven cents.

The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (residents who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is connected with vehicles (交通) in a city. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departments, public works (including street repairs, water and sanitation(卫生) and municipal buildings.

Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes.

72. The income tax for $ 20000 paid to the federal government is _______.

A. $3000 B.$5600 C. $ 1600 D. $ 1000

73. Tax for the state government includes _______.

A. property tax B. excise tax      C. salary tax D. sales tax

74. Which of the following statement s true?

A. America leads the world with a very good tax system.

B. Peope in some states have to pay income tax to state government as much as to federal government.

C. $ 17850 is the cutoff for two levels of income tax.

D. Property tax is given on vehicles in a city.

75. What do Americans feel about their tax?

A. It is reasonable.          B. It is acceptable.

C. It takes away 1/5 of their total work. D. It is not high.

Dear Editor of "Xinxiang Daily :

Yesterday afternoon our monitor led the whole classmates to have a discussion about the good and bad sides of setting off firecrackers during the spring festival. We had different viewpoints on the problem. Half of us believe that setting off firecrackers during the spring festival is Chinese cultural tradition and it certainly adds pleasure and joy to the festival. What' s more, it may help the people to get rid of evil things. But another half of us hold that setting off firecrackers during the spring festival may cause air and noise pollution. What s worse, it sometimes causes terrible accidents to children and to our property.

Could you tell me what your opinions are, then?

yours truly

(Text 5)

W: I really like the record you lent me the other day.

M: I'm glad you like it.

W: And thank you very much for letting me keep it so long.

M: Not at all.

M: No problem.

M: I think I was very lucky to get that job. Now we are able to live in a little village.

W: All, but it won't be a little village forever. This is a developing area. There will be a lot more people here in about five years' time.

M: Yes, but there won't lie any factories. Just two or three office buildings, and they will lie far behind that woodland over there.

W: How did you sleep last night, by the way?

M: Very nice. Never sleep better. It was so quiet!

W: I didn't sleep too well. I couldn't get used to the silence. The only noise I heard last night was some birds at about two o'clock in the morning.

M: Well, the silence was wonderful for me.

(Text 9)

M: Is it true that you don't swim at all now?

W: I'm afraid so. I'm too old.

M: But you are only 20.

W: That's too old for a swimmer. If I swim in an international competition now, I wouldn't win. So I'd rather not swim at all.

M: But don't you enjoy swimming?

W: I used to, when I was small. But if you enter for big competitions you have to work very hard. I used to get up at 6 to go to the pool. I had to train before school, after school and at weekends. I swam thirt-five miles every week!

M: But you were famous at fifteen. And look at all those cups.

W: It s true that I have wonderful memories. Olympics were very exciting. But I missed some important things top. While other girls playing, I was swimming.
