SYDNEY---- Sydney will come across its biggest ever transport challenge when almost 400,000 spectators (viewers) flow into Olympic Part today, the opening day of track and field.
Games organizers yesterday made no secret that they were nervous about the unprecedented numbers that will stretch public transport in Australia's largest city to the limit.
To make matters worse, rain showers are expected.
"Friday's the day we have been worried about," said Paul Willoughby, a member of the Sydney Games Organizing Committee (SGOC).
"Everything up to now has been calm before the storm," he told a news conference." It's now hailstones (冰雹).
Track and field is the high point of the Olympics, and the atmosphere in Sydney is electric as national icon (偶像) Cathy Freeman prepares for the race that all Australia has been waiting for, the women's 400 metres.
The serious challenge facing Games organizers today will be to fill and empty the 110,000-seat Stadium Australia--- the world's largest Olympic Venue ---- twice in one day. This has never been attempted before.
Organizers suppose that it will take at least three hours for trains and buses to take and bring each wave of spectators to the huge stadium. For there to be any hope of success, the first batch (批) must set out well before dawn.
"That will put an extraordinary pressure on the transport system," Willoughby said.
A single-track train service connects Olympic Park with central Sydney. Earlier this month it was out of action for a time after high winds blew down overhead power wires.
Friday's crowds will reach its top as spectators stream out of the morning session at Stadium Australia and meet with crowds arriving for the evening programme.

With July come examinations. When these exams finish, the summer holidays begin. Boys and girls will have two months to rest.
The summer holidays are the best part of the year for most children. The weather is usually good, so that they can spend most of their time in swimming , camping or travelling with their parents.
Of course, the most enjoyable place is the seaside. Some children are lucky enough to live near the sea. They enjoy special advantages. As for those who live far from the sea, their parents will also take them to the seaside for the holidays, for they know that a week or two at a seaside town during the summer holidays is their children’s eager hope. In England not only the rich but also factory workers or bus drivers can take their children to seaside for their holidays. In fact during August Holiday most towns are empty.
Why do children like spending their summer holidays at seaside? It is because they like the sand, the sun, the cool wind and the salt water there more than anything else. Of course, there are lots of new things to see, nice things to eat, and exciting things to do, but it is the feelings of sand under one’s feet, of cool wind and salt water on one’s skin, and of the warm sun on one’s back that make the seaside what it is.

Unless action is taken immediately, there is a good chance that all the oceans of the world will be dead by the year 2010 .How can this possibly happen?
We have already seen that people allow all sorts of waste products to flow into the sea. It is almost impossible to measure how much waste water and industrial waste end up in our oceans, but we can find out how much oil is poured into them legally(合法地) and illegally. It is illegal to pour oil into the sea close to the shore, but when a ship is many miles out to sea there are no such rules. Scientists have different ideas as to the amount of oil put into the sea, but the lowest figure for oil poured in European waters alone is nearly 200,000 tons every year. Some people say the figure could be ten times as high.
It is not only our coasts that suffer from oil pollution. Among other things, many shell fish( creatures which live in water, and have a hard shell壳) ----oysters and mussels, for example----- now have high amounts of poisonous substances. Next time you have shell fish to eat, how can you be sure that they are free from oil pollution? You cannot see the effects and you cannot taste them, either. It is really quite a problem.
71.This passage is mainly about_________.
A. pollution in the oceans B. the amounts of oil in the sea
C. the amounts of poison in shell fish D. oil pollution in the waters.
72.According to the passage, what is the main cause of oil pollution?
A. Oil ships which meet and strike each other
B. Oil poured at sea when the oil tanks are cleaned out
C. Oil coming out of the bottom of the sea
D. Oil from waste water and industrial waste
73.Which of the following is illegal?
A. Pouring oil into the sea from land, especially when there is no other choice
B. Allowing waste materials to flow into the waters
C. Pouring oil at seaside
D. Going fishing when the water is polluted by oil.

M: Yes, madam. It's right at the other end of the aeroplane.
2. M: how much is this coat?
W: You're lucky, sir. That coat is on sale this week. It's only thirty-nine ninety-five now. Last week it was forty-five dollars.
3. M: The car is blue.
W: So is my sister's. But mine is red and my brother has a yellow one.
4. W: I'll go to Beijing during the summer holidays. What about you?
M: I'll spend some time in the library reading some novels and see some of my old friends.
5. M: Have you had any trouble finding a place to park?
W: Not so far. Thank goodness!
第六段材料
M: Hello. May I speak to Mr Thomas?
W: Mr Thomas isn't in right now. Who is calling, please?
M: This is Mr Tanaka from Tokyo calling. I'm on my way to the United States. I
have stopped to say hello to him.
W: Oh, yes, Mr Tanaka. I'm Mrs Thomas. I've often heard my husband speak of
you. Where are you now?
M: I'm at the Royal Hotel right now.
W: I'm afraid my husband won't be back before 12:30. Shall I ask him to call
you?
M: Yes. Please ask him to give me a ring when he comes back. But the trouble is
that I may have to go out at about one o'clock.
W: Then how can we reach you by phone?
M: That's a problem. Maybe it's better if I call him. Let's do it this way. If I don't
hear from you before one, I'll give him a ring not later than 1:30.

M: Have you ever visited a redwood forest? I recently had a chance to go to
Muriwoods National Monument north of San Francisco.
W: I've never seen a redwood tree. I really can't imagine how big they are.
M: The coastal redwoods are the tallest living things. Some are more than 350
feet high. But none of the trees at Muriwoods is that high. You have to go
further north in California to see the tallest trees.
W: You said that Muri woods is near San Francisco? I guess it must be a tourist
attraction.
M: Yes, it's less than an hour's drive away, so it's easy to go to.
W: I've heard that many redwood trees are thousands of years old. Are the ones
in Muriwoods that old?
M: The oldest recorded age for a coastal redwood is more than a thousand years.
The trees at Muriwoods are 400 to 800 years old.
W: Why have they survived so long?
M: They have remarkable resistance to forest fires. Their tough, thick bark
protects the trees during a fire. The coastal redwoods also like a damp, foggy
climate.
W: Since Muriwoods is near foggy San Francisco, it must be ideal for the trees'
survival. I can't wait to go there and see them.
第八段材料
M: I want to buy a farm. I think I'd like to grow wheat. Is the ground here good
for that?
W: No, I don't think it's good for farming.
M: Why do you know so well?
W: I own a farm here, but farming is very hard work.
M: But modern farm equipment can make farming easier.
W: Yes, but you should cut down trees, clear a lot of land and make the soil rich.
M: I don't mind hard work. I just want to get away from my factory.
W: You can have my farm at a low price, $200, if you want it.
M: All right. You're giving me the farm, aren't you?
第九段材料

A Traffic Accident
A bad traffic accident happened at about 1:00pm yesterday at the crossing near the Centre Square of the city. A taxi knocked into a bus. The taxi driver was killed, and many passengers on the bus were seriously injured and sent to No 1 Hospital immediately. The cause of the accident was found out later. The taxi driver had drunk too much and had a headache, and what was worse, it was raining and the road was wet. The taxi driver hadn’t noticed the bus coming in the opposite direction. As a result, the traffic was held up for over an hour before it moved on again.
Drivers, please never drink before driving . Life is more valuable than anything else to you and to all the others.
