Many people who achieved great things were superstitious .For example , do you know that Napoleon , the great French general who won countless battles , was afraid of cats ? People tend to believe that superstition is linked to ignorance , but this is not entirely true .

Many brilliant people have been superstitious . Rousseau , a famous French philosopher , believed he had a ghost for a companion . William Blake , an English writer and painter , thought he was brother to Socrates , who had died in 399 B.C. And Sir Walter Scott would never go to Melrose Abbey when the full moon shone brightly .

Superstitions usually arise when people try to find reasons for things that are beyond their understanding . Primitive societies (原始社会) created all kinds of fantastic explanations for illness , death , and natural events . People looked and wondered at the sky , then developed wonderful stories to account for the various clusters of stars .

Even the age of science has not destroyed people’s beliefs in irrational things .The following story is a good example . A panic shook Europe when Halley’s comet (彗星) was expected to appear in 1910. It seemed that whenever this comet had appeared in the past , devastating events had taken place .In 66A.D., for example , its appearance coincided (与…巧合)with the fall of Jerusalem . So the people of the twentieth century feared another catastrophe . They were so frightened that they even bought anti-comet pills and masks to protect themselves from deadly fumes .

   A.Most people are superstitious .

58.As used in this passage , the word irrational means     .

    A.not reasonable B.not dangerous C.unimportant D.unforgettable

59.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage ?

   A.Superstition and Catastrophe . B.Panic in Europe .

    C.Fear of Halley’s Comet . D.Superstition and Intelligence .

Nov, 5,2005—More and more TV shows , movies and sporting events are being broadcast in High Definition (HD) —including “Good Morning America.” If you want to join the millions who are already experiencing a superior picture , you’ll need a High Definition TV (HDTV). But even if you’re ready to retire your old TV— or move it into the back bedroom where no one will ever see it —you’re bound to have lots of questions before you make an investment in a new drool-worthy HDTV.

You might be wondering about hardware , cost and how to actually receive High Definition programming on your set . “GMA” technology contributor Becky Worley offers this primer (入门书) to understanding the complicated world of HD.

What is HDTV ①?

High definition TV is a richer transmission of television signals that makes for a more vivid viewing experience . HDTV is to standard TV what FM radio is to AM radio . HDTV is crisp , clear and noise-free , with resolution that is at least twice that of analog (模拟信号)television and CD-quality sound .

How Do I Get HDTV ②?

HDTV signals are broadcast via antennas in urban areas , and via satellite TV or cable TV.

To receive an over-the air HDTV signal, you must live within a certain radius (半径)of an HDTV broadcast antenna and have the proper HDTV tuner (调谐器) / antenna (天线) installed in your home .

To receive a Cable or Satellite HDTV signal , you must have a proprietary HDTV set-top box supplied by your provider .

Not all programming is available in HDTV yet , but many network shows and sporting events are currently in HD and many more are converting over .

When you watch a DVD on your HDTV , it is not technically HDTV quality , but it will look crisper on your HDTV than on a regular TV.

HDTV, HD-Ready TV, and EDTV

There are three major terms that will describe the high-end TV sets that are on sale today :HDTV ③ are TV sets that can receive and process over-the-air HD signals . You may need an antenna to receive the HD signal , but an HD tuner is built into the set and can process the signal without any other equipment . If you want to receive an HD signal from your cable or satellite provider , you will need one of the provider’s proprietary set-top boxes .

HD-Ready TV are TV sets that need an additional piece of hardware to actually receive the HD signal , such as a stand-alone HD tuner (from $250 and up ) or the set-top HDTV box provided by your cable or satellite TV company .

EDTV stands for Enhanced Digital Television . The visual quality of an EDTV is better than a standard analog TV, but is not as crisp or bright as a true HDTV.

64.Which of the following best describe the features of HDTV?

A.It offers more TV channels and choices of programs .

B.It offers more interesting and entertaining programs .

C.It offers programs with clearer pictures and sound of better quality .

D.It offers program for high technology

65.How to understand the underlined sentence “HDTV is to standard TV what FM radio is to AM radio.” in this passage ? It is     .

A.an example to show HDTV is different from common TV.

B.a comparison to show HDTV is more advanced than common TV.

C.an example to show the similarity between HDTV and FM radio .

D.a comparison to show HDTV is better than FM radio .

66.Does “HDTV” carry the same meaning in different places (①②③) of this article ?

A.①and ②carry the same meaning while ③carries different meaning .

B.①and ③carry the same meaning while ②carries different meaning .

C.②and ③carry the same meaning while ①carries different meaning .

D.①, ②and ③all carry the same meaning .

67.If you want to receive HDTV program at home , you should have      .

A.an antenna , an HDTV set and a tuner

B.an HD-ready TV set and live within the radius of an HDTV broadcast antenna

C.an HDTV set , an antenna and live within the radius of an HDTV broadcast antenna

    D.an EDTV set and a set-top box

How easy has it been to produce counterfeit (假冒的) American currency ? Much easier than you suspect . Whereas in earlier times a good counterfeit required the craftsmen skilled in photographic and fine printing techniques , in the current computer age a scanner , together with good ink , high-quality paper , and a laser printer can produce very adequate copies . So common had counterfeiting become , particularly in overseas countries desirous of dollars , that there were estimates that $2 billion in counterfeit money would be in circulation (流通)by the year 2000.

In the 1990s the U.S. Treasury Department began taking steps to safeguard American

currency .Beginning with the $ 100 bill-the denomination (面值) most often counterfeited-They both changed the appearance of the bill and added several elements to make counterfeiting it more difficult . The most conspicuous change was the new portrait : not only Ben Franklin’s image changed and made larger , it was set off-center on the bill and printed with ink that would blur (变模糊) if photocopied . A watermark was also added . This image , which can be seen when a bill is held up to the light , is stamped into the currency paper as it is made and can not be reproduced by scanner or copier . Security threads , also built into the paper , were a final safe-guard . Filaments of yarn (金属丝)a few thousandths of an inch wide , these threads have identifying figures printed on them . A different filament is put into each denomination of money and set in a slightly different location .

Will these improvements, also made on other bills , stop counterfeiting altogether ? Most likely not. But they will make it easier for anyone checking to identify and root out counterfeits .

68.According to the passage , security threads       .

A.are visible on the surface of each new bill

    B.have identifying number on them

    C.are made of colored filaments

D.were replaced in the new bills by watermarks

69.What does the underlined word conspicuous mean in this passage ?

    A.very noticeable B.quite dark C.very strict D.quite safe

70.What can you infer from this passage ?

A.Only 100 dollar and large bills are likely to be counterfeited

B.It is possible to get rid of counterfeiters once and for all .

C.The safeguards to American currency make it not so easy to be counterfeited .

D.Counterfeiters were always with good craftsman skill and high techniques .

71.What would be the best title for this passage ?

A.Making Counterfeit Money B.Scanners and Watermarks

C.Playing Tricks on the U.S. Treasury D.Protecting American Currency

My mother insisted that I write a B & B letter to my grandparents . I told her I could not write one , and I didn’t know what a B &B letter was . She explained that it is bread and butter you write to people to thank them for having you as their houseguest . I told her she ought to think of a substitute term for a letter if she wanted to define it . Mother then made a remark about how Western Civilization was in a decline(衰落) because people of my generation only knew how to nitpick (吹毛求疵).

I did not think I owed grandparents a B & B letter . And then I stated my case . Fact : I was a member of the family , not a houseguest ; and fact : I hadn’t been their houseguest by choice because fact : She had sent me to them because she had won a cruise for selling more houses in her company than anyone else and if she had shared her cruise with me instead of with my father , I would not have been sent to Florida and fact : She , not me , owed them thanks , and further fact : I had been such a wonderful help while I was there that my grandparents would probably want to write me a B &B . Mother drew in her breath , but said , “Write”, and closed my bed room door behind her .

I took out a ballpoint pen and started pressing it against a piece of paper . When I was down in Florida , Grandma had said “The ballpoint pen has been the biggest single factor in the decline of Western Civilization . It makes the written words cheap , fast and totally without character .” My mother and Grandma should get together . Not because I was trying to save Western Civilization but because I wanted to get my B&B letter written , I took out a sharpened pencil and a pad of Post-it notes to jot down any idea that might come to mind .

72.Why did the writer’s mother say that people should write a B&B letter ?

A.Because writing a B&B letter is as important as our daily food .

B.Because it is polite way of thanking people for their hospitality .

C.Because it is something you do when you owe people a favor .

D.Because it is cheaper to thank people than to buy them gifts.

73.When the writer’s mother said that “Western Civilization was in a decline,” she was referring to the fact that     .

A.Many of the younger generation didn’t know what a B&B letter was .

B.She was having difficulty finding a suitable term to define a B&B letter .

C.Younger people didn’t know how to thank people .

D.The younger generation knew nothing about tradition and only knew how to nitpick .

74.Who did the writer think should write a B&B letter to his grandparents ?

    A.The writer’s mother . B.The writer’s brother .

    C.The writer’s father . D.The writer’s grandparents .

75.We can infer from the passage that     .

A.The writer’s mother had gone on a cruise to sell houses .

B.The writer’s mother wanted to save Western Civilization .

C.The writer decided to write a B&B letter to his grandparents .

D.The writer didn’t want to save Western Civilization .

书面表达(One possible version:)

Where There Is A Will , There Is A Way

The proverb “ Where there is a will , there is a way,” is a well-known saying that is inspiring and encouraging .

There are a lot of examples in the world to prove the truth of this proverb . ChenJingrun , a famous mathematician , made up his mind to solve one of the most complicated mathematical problems and worked hard at it despite the unimaginable difficulties he met with . He had no computer , no assistant , and even no room to do his calculation . He worked alone day and night . And finally he succeeded in what no one had achieved . And there are many similarly resolute persons such as Madame Curie and Thomas Edison .

Young people should have lofty aspirations and take the firm resolution to realize their ambition . Just as the proverb goes , “Where there is a will , there is a way”.
