The incident took place on Sunday, the 25th of June On that particular day, a south wind had been gusting (劲吹)on and off all morning. It was not strong enough to cause us any concern, so we carried on with our daily work not suspecting what was about to happen.

The storm gave us very little warning. Black clouds loomed over the distant horizon(地平线) so suddenly that we were taken by surprise. Even then, we were not really worried, as the clouds seemed to be moving over our house and towards the distant mountains. Then, just as the clouds had moved inland, the wind suddenly swung around in a full circle and we were facing a major storm.

Instantly, we were busily preparing for the worst. The whole family had experienced such a storm before and everyone remember the damage it had caused to stock and crops. There was very little we could do about the crops. But we needed to protect the animals in case the river flooded again. My older brother called his sheep-dog and began driving our small flock of sheep to higher ground above the river. If the river flooded, they should be safe there.

In the meantime, my father was mending a shed roof that had partly fallen down after many years of fine service. If the tin flew off, it could damage the house. My younger brother began hurriedly carrying firewood under the shelter. My job was to help Mum board up the windows. If the storm developed into a cyclone (旋风), the boards would protect the glass.

The storm raged for four hours , pouring more rain on us than we had seen in the last five years. As expected, the river broke its banks and came slowly up towards the house and the stock.

Then just as we were beginning to lose hope, the storm stopped as suddenly as it had begun. The animals were safe, and the roof was still nailed on. “ All ’ s well that ends well.” said my mother.

Unlike modern animal scientists, dinosaur scientists cannot sit on a hillside and use telescopes to watch dinosaurs in order to know how they lived and whether they were good parents. Instead, they have to search hard for information from dinosaurs’ fossils(恐龙化石) because dinosaurs died out millions of years ago.

It’s very difficult for the scientists to reach an agreement because different results can be got from the same fossils. Many fossils of the same kind of dinosaurs have been dug out from one place. They might have formed when an entire group of dinosaurs got stuck(陷入)all at once, or they might have been the result of dinosaurs getting stuck one after another over a course of a few centuries. Thus we can say that dinosaurs might have in the first case lived in big groups and in the second lived alone.

Though there are two different results, dinosaur scientists now generally agree that at least some kinds of dinosaurs lived in big groups. “That’s pretty much settled at this point.” Says Paul Sereno. A kind of dinosaurs called Sauropods left behind tracks in the western United States that appeared to run north and south, suggesting that they even moved long distances together.

As to whether dinosaurs cared for their young, dinosaur scientists have turned to the closest living relatives of dinosaurs ― birds and crocodiles ― for possible models. Birds give a lot of care to their young, while crocodiles just help their young to the water. The discovered fossils of dinosaurs sitting on their eggs and staying with their young suggest the parents were taking care of their babies, but we still cannot say that all dinosaurs did the same.

There is still a long way to go before the above questions could be answered. Dinosaur scientists will have to find more proof to reach an agreement.

45.Dinosaur scientists can get information directly by .

A. studying dinosaur fossils      B. examining modern animals

C. watching dinosaurs        D. using telescopes

46.What is pretty much settled according to Paul Sereno?

B. Most dinosaurs moved long distances.

C. Many dinosaurs settled in the north.

D. Some dinosaurs lived in big groups.

47.Dinosaur scientists can probably know whether dinosaurs were good parents by .

A. watching many kinds of animals B. studying dinosaurs’ living relatives

C. following the tracks left behind D. working on dug-out dinosaur eggs

48.Which of the following is true according to the 4th paragraph?

A. Birds hardly pay attention to their young.

B. Baby crocodiles can look after themselves well.

C. Some dinosaurs took care of their young.

D. Birds and crocodiles take good care of their young.

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(药店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay away because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.
Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers – and most of them aren’t nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn’t. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.

The problem is most people don’t know the safe way to surf the Web. “They use a search engine like Google, get 18 million choices and start clicking. But that’s risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(权威的), it’s hard to know whether what you’re reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.

53. According to the text, an increasing number of Americans_____.

A. are suffering from mental disorders

B. turn to Internet pharmacies for help

C. like to play deadly games with doctors

D. are skeptical about surfing medical websites

54. Some Americans stay away from doctors because they _____.

A. find medical devices easy to operate

B. prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors

C. are afraid to face the truth of their health

D. are afraid to misuse their health insurance

55. According to the study of Brown Medical School, ______.

A. more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors

B. only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profit

C. about 1/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality

D. 72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts

56. Which of the following is the author’s main argument?

A. It’s cheap to self-treat your own illness.

B. It’s embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.

C. It’s reasonable to put up a medical website.

D. It’s dangerous to be your own doctor.

E

There are two main forms of teaching in Nottingham University: seminar (研讨会)and lecture. They are very different from the sort of teaching most often used in schools and colleges.
In seminars you will be taught with discussion focusing on a text or topic set in advance in a Friendly and informal atmosphere. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to try out new ideas and to think through difficulties with fellow- learners. Students develop friendships through groups, as well as learning more about other people’s ideas. You can also know your tutors as an individual rather than a face at the end of the room.
Lectures are the most formal. There may be over a hundred in the audience and the lecture will last about fifty minutes. The value of the lecture is that it can present to a large number of people information which is not readily available in books, that it can give you an opportunity to hear a specialist develop a coherent(有条理的)argument, and that it can show visual material to a wide audience.
Your typical week’s work will feel strange after school or college since there are fewer timetabled teaching hours. Each week in the first year you may attend about six lectures and four to six seminars or tutorials(辅导). For the rest of the time you are working on your own, doing the necessary reading in preparation for tutorials or writing seminar papers. When writing an essay or carrying out project work, you can often discuss with your tutor about the title and topic.
57. The purpose of the passage is_______.
 A. to introduce two main forms of teaching
 B. to persuade you to try out new ideas
 C. to stress the importance of discussion
 D. to make you believe that seminar is more helpful
58.One of the values of the lecture is______.
A. to make friends through groups
B. to learn more about other people’s ideas

C. to offer a chance to discuss with a specialist
D. to present to students information not found in books
59.Your typical week’s work in the university will feel strange because______.

A. you may have no project work after class
B. you may give lectures and seminars
C. you may have fewer timetabled teaching hours
D. you may write seminar papers with fellow-learners
60.We can learn from the passage that__________.
A. seminar is better than lecture
B. lecture is better than seminar
C. seminar is more formal than lecture
D. lecture is more formal than seminar
