In 1985, The Coca-Cola Company made what has been known as one of the biggest marketing mistakes. The Coca-Cola Company stumbled onto the new formula (Åä·½) in efforts to produce diet Coke. They put forth 4 million dollars of research to come up with the new formula. The decision to change their formula and pull the old Coke off the market came about because taste tests showed a distinct preference for the new formula. It was a sweeter variation with less tang(Ũζ), it was also slightly smoother.
A large contribution to the change was that Coke's market share fell 2.5% in four years. Each percentage point lost or gained meant 200 million dollars. A financial analyst said, "Coke's market share fell from 24.3% in 1980 to 21.8% in 1984." This was the first flavor change since the existence of the Coca-Cola Company. The change was announced on April 23, 1985 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at the Lincoln Center. Some two hundred TV and newspaper reporters attended this very glitzy announcement. It included a question and answer session, a history of Coca-Cola, and many other elements.
The change to the world's best selling soft drink was heard by 81% of the U.S. population within 24 hours. Within a week of the change, one thousand calls a day were flooding the company's eight hundred number. Most of the callers were shocked and/or outraged, many said that they were considering switching to Pepsi. Within six weeks, the eight hundred number was being jammed by six thousand calls a day. The company also fielded over forty thousand letters, which were all answered and each person got a coupon for the new Coke. A retired Air Force officer, explained in a letter to the Coca-Cola Company, that he wanted to be buried in a Coke can, but now that this change had come about he was reconsidering.

Flight attendants are part of those working on airplane passenger flights. They serve as a connection between the airline and its passengers. They satisfy the personal needs and comforts of the passengers while carrying out normal duties. They try to make the passengers' trip so enjoyable that they will want to fly with the airline again. Attendants receive training that helps them work calmly in an emergency and ensure the safety of the passengers.
¡¡ The first flight attendants on U.S. airlines were men. But from the 1930's until the 1970's, the airlines hired only women as attendants. Though men have now returned to the position, the majority of flight attendants are women.
¡¡ Long-distance flights have as many as 14 attendants on the largest jets and 6 on other planes. Most short-run jet flights have at least 3 attendants.
¡¡ Flight attendants check on flight conditions, food, and emergency equipment. They give safety instructions to the passengers, make flight announcements before and after take-off, and try to make the passengers as comfortable as possible.
¡¡ Flight attendants are trained at special schools. The course lasts from three to seven weeks. The training includes wide classroom work and practical in-flight experience in a model cabin (»ú²Õ).

¡¡¡¡¡¡ Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient custom which has existed for at least six thousand years£®It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it£®Modern skill has changed this£®Either man will stop war, or war will stop man£®For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the greatest danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in ending the existence of nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in ending war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre (´óÍÀɱ), but by arbitration (ÖÙ²Ã) in accordance with agreed principles of law£®It is not easy to change old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted£®
¡¡¡¡¡¡ There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (ÒâʶÐÎ̬) would prevent war£®I believe this to be a complete error£®All ideologies are based upon beliefs without proof which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false£®Those people who believe them are willing to go to war in support of them£®
¡¡¡¡¡¡ The movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely as we can welcome£®It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided£®Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago£®It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find them wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict (³åÍ») nowadays is not between East and West but between Man and the atom bomb.
63£®This passage implies that war is now ____________.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ C£®it is impossible for people to live without war

If you've been joining in chat room conversations, or trading email with Webpals, you have become one of the millions who write in a peculiarly short form of English.
And you've got a sense of humour about short forms like SOHF (=sense of humour failure) to describe Internet newcomers who don't understand you.
Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are¡°talking¡±on-line¡ªmany of them all talking at the same time.
It's fast: try talking to six people at once. It's brief: three or four per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers.
And it requires tremendous linguistic economy. There's neither time nor space for explanations. Why consume precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB ( be right back) will do? Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (pardon me for jumping in).
Interested in whom you're talking to? Type ASL, the nearly universal request to know your pal's age, sex and location. You may get 15 MNY as a response from your pal.
If something makes you laugh, say you're OTF(on the floor) or LOL (laughing out loud), or combine the two into ROTFL(rolling on the floor laughing).
And when it's time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (got to go) or TTYL (talk to you later).
People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes more time to hold down the ¡°shift¡± key and capitals. Punctuation is going, too.
67. Many people talk on the Internet ____________.
¡¡ A. by sending short emails¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
B. by using a particular short form of English
C. by using peculiar English words and expressions
D. in a funny way
68. In order to talk to several people at the same time on the Internet____________.
¡¡ A. you have to speak fast and fluently¡¡¡¡
B. you should speak with wit and humour
C. you have to express your ideas in a brief way
D. one should pay much attention to the accuracy of the words
69. If you get 17 FNY as an answer to your ASL, it means____________.
¡¡ A. the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine
B. you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York
C. you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York
D. the person who are talking to you is a 1.7-foot tall New York girl
70. To save time on the Internet____________.
¡¡ A. some people leave their letters in the dust bin
B. some people never use¡°shift¡±in their writing
C. many people leave the capital and punctuation
D. people seldom use capital letters or punctuation

Dear Smith,
Nice to hear from you again. As you know, this summer vacation, at the end of July, 2007, we winners of NEPC will go to a four-day English Summer Camp in Dalian. Some English teachers from China, the USA, England and Australia will join us.
In the camp, we will have some English speaking competitions, watch some wonderful performances given by the students and visit some places of interest in Dalian. Besides, we will exchange our English learning experience and talk about our colorful school life in English. I think this summer camp will greatly improve my spoken English and I will make some new friends there.
I do hope you will come and join us.
Best wishes.¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Yours truly,
¡¡Zhao Ning
