A 10-year-old boy fatally shot his father on Friday, striking him several times as he sat in the front seat of a SUV to pick up the boy from his mother’s home for a weekend visit.

The incident happened about 3:45 pm on a cul-de-sac in the 1700 block of Cedar Cove Court, said Williams of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department.

An investigation found that Rick James Lohstroh, 41, was shot by his son, who was sitting in the back seat of the man’s Toyota 4-Runner, said Williams. The shooting took place outside the home of Lohstroh’s ex-wife, where the boy lives with his mother and a 7-year-old brother.

“We’re not certain of anything until we finish our investigation,” Williams said. “The information we have at this time is that the 10-year-old did fire the weapon.”

The mother and the 7-year-old brother were inside the house, when the shooting occurred, said Williams.

Williams said the gun belonged to the boy’s mother. After firing shots through the back seat, the boy exited the back of the vehicle and continued to fire at the car.

The man died on the way to Memorial Herman Hospital.

Lohstroh was a doctor at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

The man and woman shared custody(监护) of the children.

Williams said the mother and the boy were still in the home talking to investigators Friday night.

Neighbors described the family as being quiet and keeping to themselves.

Dog Translation Products Coming to U.S.

A Japanese toy maker declares that they have developed a gadget(小器具) that translates dog barks into human language and plans to begin selling the gadget-under the name of Bowlingual-in U.S. pet stores and gift shops this summer.

Tokyo-based Takara Co. Ltd. says about 300,000 of the dog translator gadgets have been sold since it was on sale in Japan late last year. It is forecasting far bigger sales once an English language translation for dogs comes to America in August. The United States is home to about 67 million dogs, more than six times the number in Japan.

“We know that the Americans love their dogs so much, so we don’t think they will mind spending $ 120 on this product,” the Takara marketing manager said during an interview at a recent pet products conference in Atlanta.

Regarded as one of the coolest inventions of 2005 by Time magazine, Bowlingual is made up of a 3-inch long wireless microphone that is fastened to a dog collar and sends out sounds to a small console(控制台) that is connected to a database. The console divides each bark into six emotional types-happiness, sadness, disappointment, anger, threat and desire-and shows common phrases, such as “You’re ticking me off,” that fit the dog’s emotional state.

Takara says it has spend millions of dollars developing the gadget in cooperation with famous sound experts and animal behaviorists.

One thing that does appear certain is that the markets for animal translation products will likely remain a dog’s world since Takara has no plans to develop a similar gadget for cats. “They are too unpredictable(反复无常),” the marketing manager said.

In my opinion, between persons of equal income, there is no social difference except that of achievements and value. Money is nothing. Character, behavior and ability are everything. There would be great people and ordinary people and little people, but the great would always be those who had done great things, and never the fools whose mothers had cared for them too much and whose fathers had left them a hundred thousand dollars a year; and the little people would be persons of small minds and mean characters, and not poor persons who had never had a chance. That is why fools are always I favor of inequality of income (their only chance of being well-known), and the really great in favor of equality.

As for Americans, being hardworking, thrift(节俭), and ambition are positive values. They encourage their children to be competitive, to get ahead, to make money, to get possession. In games and in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the award, the contract. They go in for labor-saving devices, new inventions, speed and shortcuts. They think every young couple should set up a home of their own, and they pity the couple who must share their home with their parents, or get along with other relatives. Actually, of course, not all Americans hold all these values, and those who do may hold other, and at times contradictory(矛盾的) values that affect their ways of behaving. In the mains, however, the collective(集体的) expectation of their society is that these are desirable(值得做的) goals, and each person, whatever his personal opinion may be, is under considerable and similar pressure.

49.It seems that the author looks down upon people belonging to _________.

    A.the poor B.the great C.the little D.the ordinary

50.The underlined sentence “Character, behavior and ability are everything” means ______.

    A.money is nothing

B.there is no difference between people of equal incomes

C.the difference of achievement and value is the most important

D.every person has a chance to succeed, which depends on one’s character, behavior and

    ability

51.To most Americans, it is a pity that __________.

A.young couple live with their parents or relatives

    B.they leave their relatives alone

    C.young couples lose their homes

    D.they do hard work

52.This passage tells us that __________.

A.generally speaking, Americans have the similar expectation of their society

B.it is not easy for everyone to live in the USA

C.in the American society, people can never agree with each other

D.in the USA, everyone values the same

D

A man steps on what seems like solid ground but discovers with horror that the ground is giving way beneath his feet. The man struggles desperately, but he is strapped. He can’t escape. Slowly he sinks deeper and deeper until at last he is gone, buried in the treacherous(貌似安全的) earth. The solid ground was solid only in appearance. It was actually quicksand, which is a deep mass of fine sand mixed with water.

How is quicksand formed? Water pushes up from below the surface and is held by the sand. The grains of sand are forced apart by the water. They can’t hold any weight. The subsurface water may have come from a spring, a river, or a stream. Sometimes pools of water near beaches become filled with sand. When the sand under these pools does not allow for good drainage(排水), the sand can become stretches of quicksand.

Is it true that a man who steps into quicksand is doomed to die? No, four men have fought their way from quicksand to firm land again. It is panic that creates the condition that can result in death, for the more a person struggles, the worse matters become. Quick movements will make the sand yield temporarily(暂时), but then it rushes back and settles solidly around the body. A man trapped in quicksand should either lie back or not move at all, except to stretch out his arms. When the weight of the sand around his body has displaced equals his weight, he will stop sinking. With feet held still, and with slow movement of the arms, as in the backstroke in swimming, men have managed to toll to safety and reach firm ground.

53.Which of the following is implied but not stated in the passage?

A.All ground that looks solid is really quicksand.

B.It is a frightening thing to be caught in a quicksand.

C.Only heavy men can be trapped in quicksand.

D.A man trapped in quicksand is doomed.

54.Which statement does the article lead you to believe?

A.Men should never try to escape from quicksand.

B.Stretches of quicksand are found only under the sea.

C.It is hard to keep calm if you fall into quicksand.

D.It is easy to get out of quicksand.

55.Why is poor drainage under sand-filled pools dangerous?

A.These pools can become filled with water.

B.These pools can become stretches of quicksand.

C.Men who step into them start to fight in panic.

D.Men trapped in it can never return.

56.Which statement seems true according to the passage?

A.Men put too many traps in quicksand.

B.Water-filled grains of sand hold weight.

C.San-filled pools are not so dangerous a quicksand.

D.You cannot always tell solid land by sight.

E

You’ve heard the saying: if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there. Thousands of successful people attribute most of their success to goal setting. Knowing this ,why don’t the majority of people set goals?

Goal setting starts within you. You have to believe it’s possible to do a thing before you will have a strong desire to write it down on paper and take steps to make it happen.

How do you possible bring yourself to believe in your own success? After all, so many of you have been at this success thing for a while and it still hasn’t happened to you. Companies that you believed in and worked hard for have failed, your family and friends are waiting for you to “be realistic”, and life just keeps giving you one blow after another. But there is a small fire burning inside of you. You keep at it because all you know is you can’t continue to get up every morning, to work for someone else and allow them to determine how much you’re worth each week which is far below your true value.

So where do you go from here? Where do you start today? The road to inner belief in your success begins with you telling yourself every day, throughout the day, that you can do what you set out to do, you can have what you set out to get, and you can be that successful person you know that lives inside of you. Yes, obstacles will come, doubters will be around, but don’t you be one of them.

Treat yourself like the person you love and care about most. If you had children who had a paper route and they wanted to accomplish a goal but they kept running into obstacles, what would happen? They would soon become discouraged with so many people telling them no. I’m not interested in what you have to offer. What would you say to your child? I’m sure it won’t be the same thing you would speak to your discouraged child, to yourself. If you would never put a loved one down, especially when they are feeling discouraged, why would you do that to yourself? You have the power within to stop it right now and turn it around.

Be committed from this point forward, to speak words of encouragement to yourself. The mind is an amazing thing. You can convince yourself of anything over time. If you repeatedly tell yourself every day, throughout the day, how successful you are, how capable you are, you will not only start to believe it, you will start to live it.

57.What does the author mean by saying “Turn it around”?

A.You should speak words of encouragement to your discouraged child.

    B.You shouldn’t put a loved one down.

    C.You should encourage yourself.

D.You should divert the subject of the conversation

58.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Thousands of successful people owe most of their success to goal setting.

B.The majority of people set goals in order to succeed.

C.We can bring ourselves to believe in our own success.

D.We should say words of encouragement to ourselves.

59.According to the author, how should you treat yourself?

A.Treat yourself like an innocent child.

B.Treat yourself like a hero who can do everything.

C.Treat yourself like a fool who can’t achieve anything.

D.Treat yourself like the person you care and love most.

60.In the eyes of the author, _____________ is what you should do to set a goal.

A.being ambitious to do whatever you like to do

B.telling yourself time and again that you can do it

C.being committed to whatever you are doing

D.convincing others that you are quite capable
