Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value.

The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London Printer-Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps.

Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius’ Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid” on the several hundred stamps that he printed.

Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blue’s rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $ 16 800 for it.

C.was one of the British colonies D.was a small island in the Pacific Ocean

Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the way many North Americans interact(互动) these days. The term is “networked individualism”. This concept is not easy to understand because the words seem to have opposite meanings. How can we be individuals and be networked at the same time? You need other people for networks.

Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internet and e-mail, our social networks included live interactions with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice to voice, person to person, in real time.

A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project showed that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to-person interaction. However, a lot of people interviewed for the Pew study say that’s a good thing. Why?

In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated us and caused up to spend too much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew study discovered that the opposite is true. The Internet connects us with more real people than expected-helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them make major life decisions.

Thanks to the computer, we are able to be alone and together with other people-at the same time!

59.The underlined phrase “networked individualism” probably means that by using computers people ______________.

A.stick to their own ways no matter what other people say

B.have the rights and freedom to do things of their own interest

C.do things in their own ways and express opinions different from other people

D.are able to keep to themselves but at the same time reach out to other people

60.According to the Pew study, what do many people rely on to make major life decisions?

  A.Networks. B.Friends. C.Phones. D.Parents.

61.It can be inferred from the Pew study that __________.

A.people have been separated from each other by using computers

B.the Internet makes people waste a lot of time and feel very lonely

C.the Internet has become a tool for a new kind of social communication

D.a lot of people regard the person-to-person communication as a good thing

62.Which would be the best title for this passage?

  A.We’re Alone on the Internet.

  B.We’re Communicating on the Internet.

C.We’re Alone Together on the Internet.

D.We’re in the Imaginary World of the Internet.

A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way to get people to avoid unhealthy foods: change their memories. Scientist Elizabeth Loftus of the University of California at Irvine asked volunteers to answer some questions on their personalities and food experiences. “One week later,” Loftus says, “we told those people we’d fed their answers into our smart computer and it came up with an account of their early childhood experiences.” Some accounts included one key additional detail. “You got sick after eating strawberry ice-cream.” The researchers then changed this detail into a manufactured(人为促成的) memory through leading questions-Who were you with? How did you feel? By the end of the study, up to 41% of those given a false memory believed strawberry ice-cream once made then sick, and many said they’d avoid eating it.

When Loftus published her findings, she started getting calls from people begging her to make them remember hating chocolate or French fries. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. False memories appear to work only for foods you don’t eat on a regular basis. But most important, it is likely that false memories can be implanted(I灌输) only in people who are unaware of the mental control. And lying to a patient is immoral, even if a doctor believes it’s for the patient’s benefit.

Loftus says there’s nothing to stop parents from trying it with their overweight children. “I say, wake up- parents have been lying about Father Christmas for years, and nobody seems to mind. If they can prevent diseases caused by fatness and all the other problems that come with that, you might think that’s more moral lie. Decide that for yourself.”

63.Why did Loftus ask the volunteers to answer some questions?

  A.To improve her computer program.

B.To find out their attitudes towards food.

C.To find out details she can make use of.

D.To predict what food they’ll like in the future.

64.What did Loftus find out from her research?

A.People believe what the computer tells them.

B.People can be led to believe in something false.

C.People tend to forget their childhood experiences.

D.People are not always aware of their personalities.

65.According to the study, people may stop having a certain food if they ___________.

A.learn it is harmful for health

B.lie to themselves that they don’t want it

C.are willing to let doctors control their minds

D.think they once had a bad experience of eating it

66.What is the biggest concern with the method?

A.Whether it is moral. B.Who it is best for.

C.When it is effective. D.How it should be used

D

Over the last 70 years, researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes. However, of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two.

Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference.

Researchers find that, on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex. In the past half-century, average income has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same. Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.

“Dollars buy status, and status makes people feel better,” conclude some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways-scientists or actors, for example-may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs.

In a research, Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires-not just for money, but for friends, family, job and health-rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap(差距). Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone. “The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income.” says Michalos.

Another factor that has to do with happiness is age. Old age may not be so bad “Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?” asks Professor Laura Carstensen.

In one survey, Carstensen interviewed 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94, and asked them to fill out an emotions questionnaire(问卷调查). She found that old people reported positive emotions just as often as young people. Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it, or they’re more realistic about their time running out, older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don’t.

“People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot last forever,” she says. “A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85, for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.”

67.According to the passage, the feeling of happiness ___________.

A.is determined partly by genes B.increases gradually with age

C.has little to do with wealth D.is measured by desires

68.Some actors would like to accept poorly-paid jobs because the jobs __________.

A.make them feel much better B.provide chances to make friends

C.improve their social position D.satisfy their professional interests

69.Aged people are more likely to feel happy because they are more ___________.

  A.optimistic B.successful C.practical D.emotional

70.Professor Alex Michalos found that people feel less happy if ___________.

A.the gap between reality and desire is bigger

B.they have a stronger desire for friendship

C.their income is below their expectation

D.the hope for good health is greater

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.

My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she seated me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”

At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school-walking on my own!

When the Great Depression hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.

Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $ 2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel(汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.

Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world-Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.

You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

71.What Kemmons’ mom often told him during his childhood was __________.

  A.caring B.moving C.encouraging D.interesting

72.According to the author, who played the most important role in making him walk back to school again?

  A.Doctors. B.Nurses. C.Friends. D.Mom

73.What caused Kemmons to start a motel by himself?

A.His terrible experience in the hotel.

B.His previous business success of various levels.

  C.His mom’s support.

  D.His wife’s suggestion.

74.Which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother?

  A.Modest, helpful, and hard-working.

  B.Loving ,supportive and strong-willed.

  C.Careful, helpful and beautiful.

  D.Strict, sensitive and supportive.

75.Which of the following led to Kemmons’ success according to the passage?

A.Self-confidence, hard work, higher education and a poor family.

B.Mom’s encouragement, clear goals, self-confidence and hard work.

C.Clear goals, mom’s encouragement, a poor family and higher education.

D.Mom’s encouragement, a poor family, higher education and opportunities.

写作(参考范文):

Dear Manager,

I’m a visitor to your city. Yesterday, I went to your cinema to see a newly released film Pirates of the Caribbean 3. The film was very good, but I did not enjoy it because there were some problems in the cinema.

First, the film was delayed as there were so many advertisements at the beginning. It was rather annoying. Second, the sound of the film was so loud that I could hardly bear it. The third, the EXIT signs could not be seem clearly, which presented potential safety hazards. And if something terrible should happen, it would be difficult for people to get out quickly.

As a visitor to your city, I’m disappointed with my experience in your cinema. I’m writing the letter in the hope that you can consider these problems and make some improvements.

Yours faithfully,

LI Hua
