    第二部分:阅读理解(共25小题;第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)

    第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

I once studied at a major university in the Midwest United States. At the beginning of each term, I could see lots of undergraduates(大学生)accompanied by their parents gather around the dormitory buildings. Fathers often helped children with huge luggage; mothers took much concern over children’s necessities in university; while children were only absorbed in chatting with friends and getting to know each other, showing no sign of worrying about their future lives.

In fact, compared with Chinese parents, American parents care equally about their children’s advanced education and make plans accordingly. It is true that some students begin to save money for their university education quite earlier —— for example, Amy, the daughter of my workmate Stevenson, planned to continue her education after secondary school. However Stevenson earned little and could not afford the tuition. Amy had to find a part-time job, working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on holiday ——but for most American students, at least the majority of undergraduates, they are still financed by their parents.

Some parents not only take the financial burden for their children’s advanced education but also try every possible way to help them. I could still remember that our teacher once said that American parents seldom offered help to their children, by which she meant to say that Chinese parents might be too caring. However every coin has two sides. For example, my academic advisor successfully got money from a major scientific grant(资助金)to continue his research project, and then he hired an undergraduate Sarah to work with us. The fact is that research assistantship is usually competitive, especially to undergraduate students, and it turned out that Sarah was the daughter of my advisor! “When I apply to the graduate school next year, the money I make and the research experience I build up will benefit me a lot,” Sarah said. I used to think that American people behave like businessmen, but this small incident proves that they still might compromise(妥协)the rules for the benefit of their children as loving parents.

 41. The main idea of the passage is _________.

    A. American children have some difficulty in getting enough money to go to college

    B. Chinese parents give their children too much love

    C. American parents also care for their children going to university

    D. Life in American universities

 42. What’s the writer’s attitude toward the academic advisor?

    A. Angry B. Understandable C. Unfair D. Disappointed

 43. Which of the following has the same meaning as the underlined part in the second paragraph?

    A. They still use money from their parents.

    B. They are still controlled by their parents.

    C. They are still supported by their parents.

    D. They are still cared by their parents.

 44. What benefit will Sarah get because of her father’s care?

    A. Good grades. B. The chance of finding a good job in the future.

    C. Money and experience. D. Good relationship.

C

The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is plagues(疫病)that flesh receives.

The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated Arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.

During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.

In the Second World War prisoners at Auschwitz concentration camp(奥斯维辛集中营), naked(裸露的)and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.

At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most pains — taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are kinds of medicines such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms of colds.

 49. The writer offered _________ examples to support his argument.

    A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 3

 50. Which of the following does not agree with the chosen passage?

    A. The Eskimos do not suffer from colds all the time.

    B. Colds are not caused by cold.

    C. People suffer from colds just because they like to stay indoors.

    D. A person may catch a cold by touching someone who already had one.

 51. Arctic explorers may catch colds when _________.

    A. they are working in the isolated Arctic regions

    B. they are writing reports in terribly cold weather

    C. they are free from work in the isolated Arctic regions

    D. they are coming into touch again with the outside world

    B. the false idea about the common cold

    C. the reason and the way people catch colds

    D. the continued spread of common colds

D

BELT FAJAR, West Bank – of Khalil Taqataqah’s nine children, 20-year-old Andaleeb was his favorite. She was up early on Friday, made him tea and then slipped unnoticed out of the modest family home in this West Bank village.

In central Jerusalem later in the day, Andaleeb ended her life the way dozens of other Palestinians did before: She blew herself up, killing herself and six Israelis and injured scores more.

Andaleeb’s parents, sisters, best friends and close relatives painted a picture of a quiet and soft-spoken woman who had not given a hint(暗示)of her intentions.

But Andaleeb spoke of her plan in a video taken before Friday’s bombing and shown on Saturday on the Qatar-based Arab satellite TV channel AI-Jazeera.

“I’ve chosen to say with my body what Arab’s leaders have failed to say.” Said Andaleeb, repeating a frequent complaint by Palestinians that Arab nations are not doing enough against Israel.

“My body is a barrel of gunpowder that burns the enemy.” she said, reading from a piece of paper.

“She was like any other girl of her age. She spoke about love and marriage. I am so sad she’s gone. It’s the shock of my life.” said her best friend and coworker Laila Mahmoud.

A school dropout, Andaleeb had supported her family from a job at a Palestinian-owned textile factory in the nearby town of Belt Jala. She had not reported for work for nearly three weeks because of repeated closures of West Bank roads by the Israeli army, according to her relatives.

“Anyone in her place would have been out of control. It’s her destiny(天命)and it’s a source of pride and glory for us that she did what she could.” said her aunt, Jameela Taqataqah as she held back tears.

Andaleeb, the third Palestinian woman to commit a suicide(自杀)murder this year, wore blue jeans and a matching checkered shirt when she had a photograph taken two months ago.

Andaleeb, her parents’ fourth child, looked more than 20 in the photograph.

Andaleeb’s parents said they learned of their daughter’s death early this morning when Israeli troops arrived and asked everyone to step out while they searched the house.

“They arrested one of her brothers and a male cousin who lives next door.” said the parents.

 53. What’s the news story mainly about?

    A. A Palestinian girl killed herself.

    B. Andaleeb, her father’s favorite daughter.

    C. A Palestinian girl blew herself up to kill Israelis.

    D. Israeli troops arrested two Palestinian men.

 54. How many Palestinian women had committed suicide-murders so far?

    A. 12 B. 9 C. 4 D. 3

 55. All the following are true EXCEPT that ________.

    A. Andaleeb was a student before she died

    B. Andaleeb was very brave

    C. Andaleeb’s parents knew nothing about her plan

    D. Andaleeb was not satisfied with Arab leaders

 56. Which of the following is the writer of the news story most likely to agree with?

    A. Palestinians should kill more and more Israelis.

    B. Andaleeb was a lovely girl with great courage.

    C. Andaleeb’s parents should have stopped her killing herself.

    D. Andaleeb’s brother and cousin should be arrested.

Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural difference, not an economic one. Knowing your own psychological space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are, if you have two children of more, that you will also offer them separate bedrooms. In America, for instance, people are trained to want their own rooms when they have their own rooms as babies. This is very rare in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in a bed near them.

The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other, and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.

Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressures. It is almost impossible, however, to completely change your psychological space needs.

 57. The first sentence in Paragraph 1 “Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of space” means “____________”.

    A. Living space requirements are not always the same

    B. No two people need exactly the same amount of living space

    C. Nobody needs a required amount of living space

    D. The world requires the same amount of living space

    A. Americans are trained to live in large rooms since birth.

    B. Economic situation decides one’s amount of space needs.

    C. Knowing your psychological space needs is important, as it affects your future.

    D. People in various countries demand different psychological space.

 59. The best title for the passage is ________.

    A. Psychological Space

    B. American Way of Living

    C. Psychological space and Economic Pressure

    D. Space Needs in Different Countries

 60. It can be inferred from the passage that psychological space needs are mainly determined by ________.

    A. the size of house B. the number of family members

    C. cultural characteristics D. the number of rooms

    One possible version:

Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep dogs at home. 60 percent of the students think it’s a good idea to keep dogs because many old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from their dogs. Besides, getting along well with animals will make our life more interesting.

On the other hand, 40 percent of the students are against the idea. In their opinion, if too many people keep dogs at home, it will do bad to the environment. What is worse, dogs may make too much noise and even attack people. I like animals, and I don’t think it’s bad to keep dogs at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
