第二部分 阅读理解

(共25小题。第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)

第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

When you enter a crowded room or go on a picnic or to a party, who is the most attractive and appealing person? It is the person who is cheerful, has a smiling face and behaves as if he or she is enjoying every moment of the event! Such people have an optimistic opinion on life. They are the ones with a positive attitude. On the other hand, let's see that fellow in the corner with a long face. He is most probably thinking about the time and money wasted in having fun. He is a pessimist, one with a negative attitude.

A person with a positive attitude gets on well with the job at hand. He doesn't worry about what's gone before or what might happen in the future. If there is a problem, he quickly thinks of ways, to solve it. If the problem cannot be solved singly, he seeks help from someone else. He doesn't feel that it's beneath his dignity to seek assistance.

When Sonal lost her history notes days before an important examination, she sat down and cried. Then she pulled herself together, borrowed a friend's notes, worked day and night and managed to copy down whatever she had lost. Sonal passed the exam with flying colors.

It's just not possible, even for the greatest optimist, to smile all the time and feel good all day. Everyone has a period of blues now and then, when everything seems sad and without cheer. But once you develop a positive attitude, once you realize that life is a series of ups and downs, dark clouds and bright sunshine, in no time at all, you've bounced back, ready to welcome the world again with open arms and a huge smile! So from this moment on, keep your face to the sunshine and you'll never see the shadows.

41. What might be the best title of the passage?

A. To live with an aim in life B. To be a pessimist or optimist

C. Life is full of ups and downs D. Develop the positive attitude

42. The case of Sonal suggested that ____.

A. a person can solve the problem once he thinks of a way

B. Sonal made up for what she had lost by working day and night

C. Sonal was a pessimist because he lost her history notes

D. the history notes that she lost was not important for her

43. The underlined phrase bounced back in the last paragraph means ____.

A. moved back and forth B. jumped up

C. returned to active state D. came back

44. According to the last paragraph, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A. If you always look at the shadows, you will be in high spirits.

B. It is impossible for a person to be in a good mood all the time.

C. A negative attitude will make you welcome life with a big smile.

D. When someone feels sad, he thinks the world comes to an end.

B

Good morning. Earlier this week, North Korea declared that it had conducted a successful nuclear weapons test. In response to such actions, America is working with our partners to ensure a serious one.

North Korea has been pursuing nuclear weapons and defying its international commitments for years. In 1993, it announced a withdraw from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and in 1994 it committed to giving up its pursuit of nuclear weapons in exchange for help with peaceful nuclear power.

After I came to office, we discovered that North Korea had been disregarding this agreement by continuing work on a nuclear weapons program and walked away from the 1994 agreement. So we brought together other nations in the region in an effort to resolve the situation. This effort was called the Six-Party Talks, and these talks included North and South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the United States. In September of last year, these diplomatic efforts resulted in a wide-ranging Joint Statement. North Korea committed to giving up all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs.

Unfortunately, North Korea failed to act on its commitment. And with its actions this week, North Korea has once again broken its word, provoked(挑起) an international crisis. Nations around the world, including our partners in the Six-Party Talks, agree on the need for a strong resolution that will require North Korea to stop its nuclear programs. By passing such a resolution, we will send a clear message to the North Korea that its actions will not be tolerated. And we will give the nations with the closest ties to it-China and South Korea-a framework to use their positional advantage to pressure Pyongyang and persuade it to change course.

As we pursue a diplomatic solution, we are also reassuring our allies in the region that America remains committed to their security. We have strong defense alliances with Japan and South Korea, and the United States will meet these commitments. And in response to North Korea's provocation, we will seek to increase our defense cooperation with our allies, including cooperation on ballistic missile(弹道导弹) defense to protect against North Korean aggression.

45. The passage seems to be a voice from ____.

A. Tokyo B. Tian An Men C. White House D. Red Square

46. From the passage we know that the "partners" most probably refer to while the "allies" , ____.

A. North and South Korea, China, Japan and Russia; China and Russia

B. North and South Korea; China, Japan and Russia; South Korea and Japan

C. South Korea, China, Japan and Russia; South Korea, Japan, and the US

D. China, Japan and Russia; Japan, the US and China

47. The speech seems to suggest that ____.

A. the US will surely depend on Russia and China to seek a final solution

B. North Korea is the new threat against peace in Northeast Asia

C. Chinese Government will reduce the support to North Korea

D. North Korea conducted a nuclear weapons test for peaceful defense

48. The speech shows that if North Korea doesn't give up its plan, the United States ____.

A. will launch a war against North Korea

B. will make peace with it

C. will protect his allies from being attacked

D. will send more army men to South Korea

●25 July, 2005

This happened on the way home from work on a dirt road, Shanghai suburb. The driver lost control, the truck spun 180 and hit the grass on the right side. At one point the truck flipped over, landed first on the roof/left side and rolled on the left side and ended up on the wheels. The driver's head was sticking out of the left window when the truck stopped moving. Fortunately the driver only got away with bruises (擦伤).

Cairo-A bus crash south-east of Cairo on Sunday killed seven Egyptian passengers and injured 40 others, a police official said. The circumstances of the accident were unclear and no other vehicles were involved. The victims were taken to hospitals in Suez, a city about 100km south-east of Cairo. The truck driver survived. Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads, high speeds and poor enforcement(执行) of traffic laws.

Snow has varied uses or can be served for many functions. Sometimes it can be very hard, but it can also be very gentle material. Temperature has a great effect on the properties of the snow. When temperature is over zero centigrade, snow is very wet and heavy, but it has excellent adhesion(粘附) force. Figure presents the value of internal attraction or joining force of snow in various temperatures. As we can see, snow is easiest to handle, when temperature is a little bit over zero degrees.

When temperature is below zero degrees, snow is very light and fine material. All moisture (潮气) has frozen and snow is almost lighter than air. Snow is also very dry now and it's impossible to form any constructions out of snow with traditional methods.

Freshly fallen snow is maybe the finest material in the world; but it easily turns to hard and thick material. When directing pressure to snow, it becomes excellent building' material. Compressed snow can be compared to light concrete and ice to concrete.

Snow has firmness qualities when its density (密度) is over 400kg/m3. Snow is still weaker than ice, but snow has better workability and it insulates (隔离) heat better.

53. Compared with ice, snow ____ when its density is over 400kg/m3.

A. is easy to form constructions

B. is strong and can stop heat well

C. is weak and attracts heat easily

D. has less adhesion

54. Which is WRONG according to the passage?

A. The properties depend on the temperature.

B. Snow is very heavy when it is dry.

C. Compressed snow is hard just like concrete.

D. Zero degrees should be important to snow.

55. The underlined word "Compressed" in the third paragraph might mean "____".

A. Frozen B. Stored C. Melted D. Pressed

56. Which is probably the best title?

A. Man Has Found Another Fine Building Material

How old is "old"? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years ago, you were old at 35. That was the average life expectancy then. In the early 1900s, as medical knowledge advanced, the average lifespan increased to 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.

So, how old is old? The answer is one you've heard many times, from all sorts of people. "You are as old (or young) as you feel. " The calendar simply tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you have lived.

" Youth, "wrote an anonymous author, " is not a time of life - it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by deserting their ideals. "

Old is a point of view. Alice Brophy, when she worked for the New York City Commission for the Aging, said, "it annoys me when people say, `Gee, you look young for your age.' What does that mean? Is there some model that you are supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80. "

There are many myths about aging. These myths stereotype people on the basis of age. Here are some of the more common myths-and the facts.

Myths: Most older people are in poor health.

Fact: Not so. There are neither biological nor physical reasons to connect poor health with growing older. Older people are more likely to be affected with illness and physical disabilities than you are, but old age itself is not a disease. It is possible to remain physically fit throughout your life.

Myth: When you are getting old, you become senile (衰老).

Fact: Older minds can be as bright as young minds. Senility is a sign of disease; it is not part of the normal aging process. In a 1985 study of men aged 20, 40, 60 and 80, no evidence was found to indicate that aging was associated with an inevitable decline in intellectual performance in generally healthy people.

Myth: Older people are rigid, unable to change.

Fact: Older people are as diverse in their lifestyles and flexibility as young people and middle-aged people. Despite the enormous stresses they deal with-death of loved ones or job, financial, and domestic problems-they cope miraculously well. Older people give up smoking and break other bad habits just as successfully as younger people.

57. According to the passage, which statement is true?

A. Older people are not as smart as young people.

B. Aging does not mean you become unhealthy.

C. Most older people are physically fit.

D. Senility is part of normal aging process.

58. Which question is NOT answered in the passage

A. What is the average lifespan today?

B. Is senility a normal part of aging?

C. Do older people have more trouble breaking bad habits

D. Can older people deal with some enormous stresses well

59. The underlined word diverse means "____"?

A. separate B. relaxed C. changeable D. different

60. How long can a person remain physically fit according to the passage?

A. In one's childhood. B. In one's youth.

C. Throughout one's life. D. For most of one's life.

One possible version:

Some people think certain numbers may bring good luck to them. These numbers include "6,8,9" and so on. Therefore, when they want to choose a car number or a phone number, they buy the number which ends with these lucky numbers at a high price.

In my opinion, success and luck have nothing to do with such so-called lucky numbers. The only key to success or wealth lies in hard work and persistence. If we are too dependent on the lucky numbers, we may become lazy or even discouraged when they proved to be useless. We should believe in ourselves and make great efforts to struggle for success as well as wealth.
