The Ministry of Education has spared no efforts to bring on IT learning. What is its main aim? Is it to teach students how to learn the computer or is it meant to change the usual method of teaching in order to 36 students’ strong interest in computers?
Teaching students computer knowledge and skills is different 37 giving class lessons through the use of computers. And schools are beginning to pay much attention to using computers to teach students. There is 38 about the fact that IT learning plays an important role as a new teaching tool in this day of teachnology. 39 , views differ on whether the schools can achieve their targets, as success 40 whether they can make use of computers effectively.
Let’s take the subject of Chinese as an example and see 41 difficulties the experts face in their IT management. At present, 20 percent of lessons are given with the help of computers. In other words, in a period of 10 weeks, a Chinese - language teacher must spend two weeks to teach the subject 42 . In carrying out such a major policy as IT learning, the experts should know 43 that different teachers teaching different subjects have different demands, thus making it 44 to see the policy through.
Some teachers, having already got some computer knowledge, will still be forced to 45 the training courses with those who have zero knowledge about computer.
Another problem is that new teachers may be sent to work in schools 46 IT learning has just started. All teachers - including the seniors who are very 47 in teaching, who suddenly have no idea what to do when it comes to computers, will have to 48 from the very beginning. They will become 49 and their teaching performances may be badly affected.
The experts have found out how much of each subject is taught by computers in very school, and have 50 all school to complete the given work. A hard - pressed teacher may put the daily teaching 51 or the courses onto the computer just to order the required time for IT learning and then 52 the usual way. Furthermore, he may leave school work to his 53 through the computer before class comes to an end in order to “complete” his IT learning 54 . 55 the teaching of the Chinese language is concerned, do computer lessons really achieve the desire goals to raise the students’ level of Chinese, pass on common values and so on? I am not so sure.

Shenzhen is to open an online system to collect road maintenance fees Wednesday (Dec. 1), the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. The report said Shenzhen was the first city to use the system for about 700,000 vehicles registered in Shenzhen and 30,000 vehicles from Hong Kong. Vehicle owners could log onto Web site gdylf.com to pay via their China UnionPay cards. The system has been connected to most of the UnionPay member banks, the report said. The fee-collection department advised people not to use public computers while using the system in case their card passwords are stolen. But three types of vehicles would not be able to use the system. These included those who were more than a month past the payment deadline, those who had scrapped(no longer allowed to use ) cars and those who enjoyed discounts, the department said. The department would send receipts by EMS but would collect 10 yuan (US$1.2) for sites inside the city, 20 yuan inside the province and 22 yuan in other places. Shenzhen residents would receive their receipts in two to four working days while Hong Kong residents would receive theirs in five to six working days.

Professor Smith recently persuaded 35 people, 23 of them women, to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for a fortnight. When he came to explain their embarrassing errors in a scientific report, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groupings, nor did the errors appear to be entirely different.
One of the women, for example, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “the explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly. It was the woman's custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. But somehow the action got opposite in the programme. About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these programme failures. Altogether the volunteers reported 433 unintentional actions that they found themselves doing -- an average of twelve each.
There appear to be peak(峰值) periods in the day when we are at our foolish. These are two hours sometime between eight a.m. and noon, between four and six p.m. with a smaller peak between eight and ten p.m. Among men the peak seems to be when a changeover in brain programmes occurs, as for example between going to and from work. Women on average reported slightly more errors -- 12.5 compared with 10.9 for men probably because they were more reliable reporters. A surprising finding of the research is that the absent-minded activity is a danger of doing things in which we are skilled. Normally, you would expect that skill reduces the number of errors we make. But trying to avoid silly slips by concentrating more could make things a lot worse or even dangerous.
64. In his study Professor Smith asked the 35 people______.
A. to keep a record of people who tend to forget things B. to report their embarrassing errors frankly
C. to explain their curious experiences scientifically D. to keep a record of what they did unintentionally
65. Professor Smith discovered that______.
A. certain groupings can be found in the recorded incidents
B. many people were too embarrassed to admit their absent-mindedness
C. men tend to be more absent-minded than women
D. absent-mindedness is an excusable human weakness
66. Programme failures (Line7, Para.2) refers to the phenomenon that people____.
A. often fail to programme their routines beforehand B. tend to make mistakes when they are in a hurry
C. change the order of doing things without knowing it D. are likely to mess things up if they are too tired
67. We learn from the third paragraph that______.
A. absent-mindedness tends to occur during certain hours of the day
B. women are very careful to perform actions during peak periods
C. women experience more peak periods of absent-mindedness
D. men's absent-mindedness often results in funny situations
68. It can be concluded from the passage that
A. people should avoid doing important things during peak periods of errors
B. dangers can be avoided when people do things they are good at
C. people should be careful when programming their actions
D. errors don’t always result from lack of concentration

In 2002, the overall environment quality changed for the better in the province. The urban air quality has been maintained at Grade II of National Standards. The dust pollution has been somewhat reduced. The number of cities reporting acid rainfall has been decreased as a result of slightly falling frequency of acid rainfall across the province.
Great improvement has been made to the quality of the source of drinking water and major rivers in the province. The number of cities, whose water quality has been up to standards, has been increased by 13.3% over the previous year.
Two thirds of all major rivers or vital sections of major rivers in the province have been up to average degree according to water function. The trunk flows of the major rivers and the Pearl River Delta have been kept in good state. The major lakes and reservoirs in the province can all satisfy people's demand. Nearly 70% of the urban inshore seawater reaches the required quality standard in the province.
The total length of highways causing quite serious noise pollution - noise equivalent grade above 70-dB (A), has been reduced by 16.8% across the province.
69.Which of the following is supposed to be the best title of the passage?
A. Water quality up to standards B. Overall environment improved
C. Noise pollution settled Dust pollution reduced
70.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Acid rainfall has been reduced by 13.3% over the last year.
B. Water quality has been increased by 13.3% in 2002.
C. About one-third of the urban inshore seawater is still to be improved to meet the required quality.
D. Serious noise pollution has been reduced by 16.8%.

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll(死亡人数)could have been much worse.
More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar degree that shook America in 1988 reported 25,000 victims.
Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction rules in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more stronger than before.
Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints(蓝图)for improved quake-resistant(防震) buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security(safety) to cities where earthquakes often take place.
In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and laid rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the effect of ground vibrations(震动). The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete(solid) and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.
The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.
71. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that _________.
A. new computers had been installed in the buildings
B. it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highways
C. large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holiday
D. improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways
72. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to _____.
A. act against an earthquake’s effect on the building B. predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracy
C. help strengthen the foundation of the building D. measure the effect of an earthquake’s vibrations
73. The smart buildings discussed in the passage ______
A. would cause serious financial problems B. would be worthwhile though costly
C. would increase the complexity of architectural design
D. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes
74. It can be inferred from the passage that in reducing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on _______.
A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction
B. the development of flexible building materials
C. the reduction of the impact of ground vibrations D. early forecasts of earthquakes
75. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ________.
A. compare the results of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S.
B. encourage civil engineers to make wider use of computers
C. list the history of the development of quake-resistant building materials
D. report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildings

Our modern city is too crowded, and to solve the problem, I have three suggestions. First of all, practise the policy of “ Late Marriage ”and “ One Couple, One child ” so as to reduce the birth rate. Secondly, the city government must have a tight control of people entering cities to engage in trade or do various physical jobs in order to reduce the pressure on the city caused by the increasing population. Finally, more and more people suggest that living blocks with shopping centers, school, hospital as well as cinemas and theatres or even satellite towns should be built in the city suburbs or the countries round the cities. In this way city citizens will be encouraged to move there. If these three suggestions are well carried out, the city population will be greatly reduced.
