Iranian lawyer and activist Shirin Ebadi was awarded the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize on October 10 for her long fight for human rights, especially for the rights of women and children in her native land, becoming the first Iranian and the first Muslim (穆斯林) woman to win the honor.

Ebadi was chosen over such contenders as Pope John Paul and former Czech President Vaclav Havel. The Nobel committee praised her work for nonviolent reform (非暴力改革) and described her as a beacon of hope for Muslims everywhere. "She sees no conflict (冲突) between Islam and fundamental human rights," committee chairman Ole Danbolt Mjoes said in making the announcement in Olso. "It is a pleasure to award the Peace Prize to a woman who is part of the Muslim world and of whom that world can be proud. "

News of the surprise choice reached the 56-year-old Ebadi while she was on a trip to Paris to attend a conference on Iranian films. During a news conference n the French capital, she showed serenity she honed as Iran's first female judge and later as a lawyer, writer and lecturer. "The duty of life is to fight in a difficult situation, as there is in Iran," Ebadi told journalists. "If today, as a woman and lawyer, I was living in a country in which all the rights of women were respected, I wouldn't be as proud of myself as I am today. " Dressed in a black suit and wearing lipstick, the little Ebadi did not wear the traditional headscarf (头巾) required in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran's President Mohammad Khatami on October 14 welcomed the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Ebadi. "There is no one who does not delight in the success of a compatriot (同胞)," Khatami told journalists after leaving parliament, adding, "obviously I am pleased that a compatriot has achieved such success. I hope that this achievement will serve the general interest of the people, the world peace and humanity.

Digging in dirt and rock is big business. If you dig deep enough, with luck you will strike a well of oil or gas, which are used as our main source of fuel for energy.

Until now, we have only explored the Earth's outer layer, the crust (地壳) , Oil and gas wells normally go no deeper than about 6 kilometers. But as these stocks rapidly decrease a new study has shown that natural gas, mainly methane (甲烷), could be found deeper within the Earth in the mantle (地幔). This means that new sources of energy could lie at depths of 100 kilometers or more.

Oil and gas found near the Earth's surface are often described as fossil (化石) fuels. Most scientists believe that these fuels were formed by the breakdown of ancient plants and animals. But, the recent research shows that methane gas can form in the crust where there are no living creatures.

Researchers from Indiana University, in the US, wondered if this could also happen deeper down in the Earth. So they did an experiment to simulate (模拟) the effects of extreme heat and pressure in the mantle on the materials found there.

The experiment produced tiny bubbles of methane gas, the scientists reported. But, no one knows yet how much methane, if any, is actually present in the mantle. If it is present, it could seep into the crust and escape through the ocean floor.

The research could provide important clues (线索) as to how life began on the Earth. Some bacteria feed on methane. If methane were present in the mantle, it could support populations of microbes (微生物) , allowing them to survive in such an extreme environment. Stores of methane on Mars and other planets could show the possibility of life there too.

69. The main purpose of this story is to ______.

A. inform us of new sources of energy

B. tell us the latest developments on the theories of how life began on the Earth

C. introduce new research into methane gas

D. explain the importance of discovery of methane in the mantle

70. Which of the following led to the simulation experiment?

A. The shortage of energy.

B. Materials being found in the mantle.

C. Methane being found on Mars and other planets.

D. The discovery of methane without the presence of living creatures.

71. Which of the following in NOT right?

A. Methane gas could be found within 6 kilometers of the Earth.

B. The simulation experiment proved the Indiana University researchers' predictions about methane to be completely true.

C. Methane exists in extreme environment.

D. Methane is an important clue as to how life began on the Earth.

72. We can infer from the story that ______.

A. we haven't explored the mantle yet

B. in the crust there are no living creatures

C. new energy could come from deep inside the Earth

D. scientific theories can turn out to be wrong

                D

Wind is the great maker of waves. There are exceptions, such as the tidal ( 潮汐的 ) waves sometimes produced by earthquakes under the sea . But the waves most of us know are produced by winds blowing over the sea.

Now before constructing an imaginary life history of a typical wave, we need to know certain physical things about it. A wave has height, from trough (low point) to crest (high point). It has length --- the distance from this crest to that of the following wave. The period of the wave means the time it takes for succeeding crests to pass a fixed point. None of these things stays the same --- for all depend upon the wind, upon the depth of the water and many other matters .

The water that makes up a wave does not advance with it across the sea. Each drop of water turns around in a little circle with the passing of the wave, but returns very nearly to its original position. And it is fortunate that this is so. For if the huge masses of water that make up a wave actually moved across the sea, sailing would be impossible.

If we want to find the speed of a wave, we may use the following way:

Speed = wavelength×frequency

Here, wavelength is the distance between two high points ( crests ) , frequency means the number of cycles per second .

73. What causes waves?

A,Earthquakes and nothing else. B. Only wind.

C.Wind causes most waves. D. Wind causes some waves.

74. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The water of a wave moves away across the sea.

B.The water of a wave remains almost at the same place.

C.The water of a wave goes with the passing of the wave.

D.The length of a wave means the distance from the top of a wave to the bottom.

75. The speed of Wave 1 is 100cm/s , frequency 10 . The frequency of Wave 2 is 300, while its speed is twice that of Wave 1. Which of the following is right?

A.The wavelength of the two are equal.

B.The wavelength of Wave 1 is 10 times longer than that of Wave 2.

C.The wavelength of Wave 2 is longer than that of Wave 1.

D.The wavelength of Wave 1 is longer than that of Wave 2.

It is hard to predict (预言 ) how science is going to turn out , and if it is really good science, it is impossible to predict. If the things to be found are actually new, they must be unknown in advance You cannot make choices on this matter. You either have science or you don't and if you have it you have to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information, along with the neat and useful bits.

The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we don’t know enough about nature. Indeed, I regard this as the major discovery of the past hundred years of biology. It is, in its way, a clear piece of news. It would have amazed the brightest minds of the 18th century to be told by any of us how little we know and how strange seems the way ahead . In earlier times, they either pretended to understand how things worked or simply made up stones to give answers. Now that we have begun exploring seriously, we are catching sight of how huge the questions are, and how far from being answered. Because of this, we are sorry. It is not so bad being ignorant if you are totally ignorant; the hard thing is knowing in some detail the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not-so-bad spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels that can yet be trusted.

But we are making a beginning, and there ought to he some satisfaction. There are probably no questions we can think up that can’t he answered, sooner or later. Within our limits, we should be able to work our way through to all our answers, if we keep at it long enough, arid pay attention.

76. According to the writer, really good science_____________.

A. would surprise the brightest minds of the 18th century.

B. will help people to make the right choice in advance.

C. will produced results which can be predicted

D. will bring about disturbing results

77. It can be inferred from the passage that scientists of the 18th century _________.

A. thought that they knew a great deal and could deal with most problems of science

B.knew that they were ignorant and wanted to know more about nature

C.were  afraid of facing up to the realities of scientific research.

D.did more harm than good in man’s understanding nature

78 . Which of he following is NOT mentioned about scientists in earlier times?

A. They falsely declared to know all about nature.

B. They did not believe in results from scientific observation.

C. They paid little attention to the problems they didn’t understand.

D. They invented false rules to explain things they didn’t understand.

79.What is the writer’s attitude towards science?

A. He is sorry because of the ignorance of scientists

B.He is delighted because of the latest scientific findings

C. He is doubtful because of the great difficulties in scientific research.

D. He is confident though he knows well the great difficulties in scientific research.

80.  The writer believes that sooner or later__________.

A. man can’t deal with all the problems he can find because of the limits of human knowledge

B. man can find solutions to whatever questions concerning nature he can think up.

C. questions concerning nature are outside the field of scientific research

D. man can think up all the questions and answer them all

M: Yes, up through Central America.

W: I just stopped by to remind you to leave a key for me.

M: Oh, that's right. I almost forgot about it. It's very good of you to keep an eye on the house when I'm away.

W: We're glad to do it. You're working late tonight.

M: I always read through my notes about the families of my customers before I start on a trip.

W: Why do you do that?

M: I like to talk to my customers. It makes it a lot easier when you can be a friend.

W: Good morning. Sit down.

M: Thank you.

W: Now then, what's, the problem?

M: I feel terrible. I feel tired all the time ... and I get headaches.

W: Do you do much exercise?

M: Er ... well, no, not really.

W: I see. Sports? Cycling? Swimming? Nothing?

M: Er... I walk to school. That's about it.

W: What about sleeping? Do you sleep well?

M: No, not really. I wake up in the night a lot.

W: Why do you think you wake up?

M: Well, I worry a lot - mainly about school work. I'm getting behind and I can't seem to catch up.

W: Oh, dear. Do you drink anything before you go to bed?

M: I have a cup of coffee, yes. And I'm always hungry in the evening. I usually have something to eat before I go to bed.

W: OK. Well, I'm not surprised you can't sleep. I'm not going to give you anything at the     moment. I want you to go home and change a few things about your routine. Then I'll see you again in a few weeks and see how you're doing.

M: Hello, this is Mike Bayliss.

W: Hello, Mr. Bayliss. I'm phoning from the hospital.

M: Yes? Has something happened?

W: I'm afraid your son has had an accident.

M: What? Oh no ... is he hurt?

W: Well, he's broken his leg and he's got cuts to other parts of his body. But don't worry. He's seen a doctor and he's going to be all right.

M: Oh thank goodness! Can I come in and see him?

W: Yes, of course. The doctor wants to keep him under observation for 24 hours. He wants to make sure there are no problems.

M: But... what happened? What sort of accident was it?

W: He was riding his motorbike and was hit by a car.
