The production of a new version of the classic Chinese novel Dream of Red Mansions will soon begin . It will be shot in March of this year and brought to TV screens by CCTV in 2008 .

The screenplay and script have been developed over a four—year period , and the show has now reached the stage of actor selection . One of the producers , Luo Liping , acted in the old version Dream of Red Mansions in the role of Jia Qiang . He said that most of the actresses and actors would be new comers to the screen, and selected from not just Chinese , but also Japanese , Korean , Singaporean , and Thai talents . From experience gained in making the previous version , it was decided that all the chosen actors should participate in three months training before the shoot begins .

As for the show’s director , officials said that Chen Kaige was not a definite choice . “Although he expressed his willingness , Chen might not have the necessary two years available to direct the shows . Moreover , he hasn’t signed any contracts with us.” Besides Chen , there are several other directors currently reviewing and considering the script . Most of them are interested in directing this literary classic .

The new Dream of Red Mansions will benefit from an investment of about 60 million yuan . It will be the most expensive TV show ever produced in China . Most of funds will be used to set up buildings and set designs in order to recreated the image of the Grand View Garden . D

I came across and old country guide the other day . It listed all the tradesmen in each village in my part of the country , and it was impressive to see the great variety of services which were available on one’s own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside .

Nowadays a superficial traveler in rural England might conclude that the village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the residents or selling old things to visitors . Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression . There has been smaller village commerce (商业), but its vigor is still remarkable .

Our local grocer’s shop , for example , is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town . Women prefer to go there and exchange the local news while purchasing , instead of queuing up at a supermarket . And the shop owner knows well that personal service has substantial cash value .

His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town , but he will deliver anything at any time . His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an aged woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing . The wealthier customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within and an hour . I also find it satisfactory because a village shop offers one of the few ways in which a modest individualist can still get along in the world without attaching himself to the big groups of industry or commerce .

Most of the village shopkeepers I know , are individualists in their ways . For example , our shoemaker stares with a cold look at the pairs of cheap , mass—produced shoes taken to him for repair . Has it come to this , he seems to be saying , that he , a craftsman (手艺人), should have to waste his skills upon such trash ? But we all know he will in fact do excellent work upon them . and he makes beautiful shoes for those who can afford such luxury .

48.The writer considered the guidebook interesting because he found in it     .

A.the names of so many of the shops in the village around

B.many tradesmen serving local villagers in various ways

C.the variety of services available in Victorian days in Britain

D.information about jobs provided in his own and surrounding villages

49.The writer appreciates the village shop because .

A.this is a rare case of small enterprise which is still booming

B.private enterprise should survive in a competitive world

C.he welcomes personal competition with collectivized business

D.he likes the idea of achieving business success in a special way

50.What is the village shoemaker’s reaction to mass—produced shoes ?

A.He considers they are not worth the effort of mending properly .

B.He is angry with the customer for bringing in such rubbish .

C.He looks down upon the low quality of industrialized products .

D.He hates those people who do not buy his handmade shoes .

51.What might be the writer’s implied idea by writing the article ?

A.An enterprise , big or small , will prosper as long as it takes trouble to satisfy customers’ demands.

B.Modern collectivized companies have more disadvantages than an individual enterprise .

C.Commercial services can be perfect only through competition between individual and collectivized enterprises .

D.It is impossible for any large—scale enterprise to provide high quality services .

We all know that DNA has the ability to identify individuals but , because it is taken over from their ancestors , there are also regions of the DNA thread which can relate an individual to his or her family (immediate and extended ), ethnic group and even an entire population .Molecular Genealogy(宗谱学)can use this unique identification provided by the genetic markers to link people together into family trees . Pedigrees (家谱) based on such genetic markers can mean a breakthrough for family trees where information is incomplete or missing due to adoption , illegitimacy or lack of records . There are many communities and populations , which have lost precious records due to tragic events such as the fire in the Irish courts during Civil War in 1921 or American slaves for whom many records were never kept in the first place .

The main goal of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group is to build a database containing over 100,000 DNA samples from individuals all over the world . These individuals will have provided a pedigree chart of at least four generations and a small blood sample . Once the database has enough samples to represent the world genetic make—up , it will eventually help in solving many issues regarding genealogies that could not be done by relying only on traditional written records . Theoretically , any individual will someday be able to find out his or her family origins through this database .

In the meantime , as the database is being created , molecular genealogy can already confirm possible or suspected relationships between individuals . “For example , if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related , but no written record proves this relationship , we can make sure of this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers (in this case we can look primarily at the Y chromosome (染色体)),” explains Ugo A. Perego , a member of the BYU Molecular Genealogy research team .

52.People in a large area may possess the same DNA thread because .

A.DNA is characteristic of a region

B.they are beyond doubt of common ancestry

C.DNA thread has the ability to identify individuals

D.their unique identification can be provided via DNA

53.The possible research of family trees is based on the fact that .

    A.genetics has achieved a breakthrough

B.genetic information contained in DNA can be brought to view now

C.each individual carries a unique record of who he is and how he is related to others

D.we can use DNA to prove how distant an individual is to a family or a population

54.The Molecular Genealogy Research Group is building a database for the purpose of .

A.offering assistance in working out genealogy—related problem

B.solving many issues without relying on traditional written records

C.providing a pedigree chart of at least four generations in the world

D.confirming the theory that all individuals are of the same origin

55.If two men are suspected of sharing a common ancestor for some reason , .

A.we can decide according to their family tree

B.we can find the truth from their genetic markers

C.we can compare the differences in their Y chromosome

D.we can look for written records to prove their relationship
