Sometimes teens need to have some times away from their families. They may want to move out of the family home for a while. Many parents will say no to this demand. But experts say it might be a good idea to let your teens live with a friend or relative.
“It was the break I need at the time,” said Richard Lerner. He is talking about the time he spent living with his grandmother when he was 15.
“It allowed me to be a different person than I was with my parents,” Lerner said. He now heads the Institute for Children, Youth and Families at Michigan State University.
Experts say teens living away from their families can test new ways of thinking and getting along with people. They may see new solutions to problems.
This is different from running away , the experts stress. Runaways are often fleeing(逃避) serious problems.
If there is conflict(冲突) at home, having a teen live elsewhere can benefit other family members. It gives everyone space to develop better relationships.
Some teens who wants some time away from family to attend a structured summer program. Others live for a while with a relative or with the family of a friend.
Joseph Kett teaches history at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He says living at home until the late ten years has become the norm(标准、规范) only in recent times.
“In the 17th century, children were often sent to live in other people’s home when they were about 10 or 11,” he said.
Peter Sheras teaches education at the University of Virginia. He said parents should listen when a child wants to move out. They should try to find out why the child wants some time away. Often, parents can help the child find a safe place to stay during that time. In other cases, they can meet the child’s needs at home.

A is for always getting to work on time.
B is for being extremely busy.
C is for the conscientious (勤恳的)way you do your job.
You may be all these things at the office, and more. But when it comes to getting ahead, experts say, the ABCs of business should include a P, for politics, as in office politics.
Dale Carnegie suggested as much more than 50 years ago: Hard work alone doesn’t make career (事业)advance. You have to be able to sell yourself and your ideas, both publicly and behind the scenes. Yet, despite the obvious rewards of being good at office politics-a better job, a raise, praise-many people are still unable -or unwilling -to “play the game. ”
“Some people feel that office politics means some manipulative (工于心计的)behavior, ”says Deborah Comer, an assistant professor of management at Hofstra University. “But politics comes from the word ‘polite’. It can mean being kind and helpful, or even trying to please your boss, and then expecting something in return. ”
In fact, today, experts define office politics as proper behavior used to gain one’s own interest in the workplace. In many cases, this includes some form of socializing within the office environment-not just in large companies, but in small workplaces as well.
“The first thing people are usually judged on is their ability to perform well on a consistent basis, ”says Neil P. Lewis, a management psychologist. “But if two or three people are up for a promotion (提升),each of whom has similar ability, a manager is going to promote the person he or she likes best. It’s simple human nature. ”
Yet, psychologists say, many employees and employers have trouble with the politics in the office. Some people, they say, have an idealistic vision of work and what it takes to succeed. Still others mistake politics for flattery (奉承), fearful that, if they speak up for themselves, they may appear to the flattering their boss for favor.
Experts suggest changing this negative picture by recognizing the need for some self-promotion.
68. What does “office politics” mean according to the passage?
A. The code of behavior for company staff.
B. The political views and beliefs of office workers.
C. The interpersonal relationships within a company.
D. The various qualities required for a successful career.

A. unwelcome at the workplace
B. bad for interpersonal relationships
C. necessary to the development of company culture
D. an important factor for personal advancement
71. It is the author’s view that ______.
A. speaking up for oneself is part of human nature
B. self-promotion does not necessarily mean flattery
C. hard work has very little to do with one’s promotion
D. many employees fail to recognize the need of flattery

Whether we find a joke funny or not largely depends on where we have been brought up. The sense of humour is mysteriously connected with national characteristics. A Frenchman, for instance, might find it hard to laugh at a Russian joke. In the same way, a Russian might fail to see anything amusing (make sb. laugh or smile)in a joke which would make an Englishman laugh to tears.
Most funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations have a worldwide request. No matter where you live, you would find it difficult not to laugh at, say, Charlie Chaplin’s early films. However, a new type of humour, which stems largely from America, has recently come into fashion. It is called “sick humour”. Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent (cause by force)death or serious accidents, Many people find this sort of joke distasteful. The following example of “sick hamour” will enable you to judge for yourself.
A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on pestering his doctor to tell him when he would be able to go home. He was afraid of having to spend Christmas in hospital. Though the doctor did his best, the patient’s recovery was slow. On Christmas day, the man still had his right leg in plaster. He spent a miserable day in bed thinking of all the fun he was missing. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough. on New Year’s Eve he was able to hobble along to a party. To compensate for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than what was good for him. In the process, he enjoyed himself and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still mumbling something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.
72. Whether you find “sick humour” funny or not will depend on ______.
A. your having been brought up in America
B. the joke being related to a really comic situation
C. your ability to see the funny side of an unpleasant event
D. your ability to laugh until you cry
73. The man spent Christmas day feeling miserable because ______.
A. the doctor had failed to cure him
B. he was not able to be with his friends
C. being unable to walk, he did not enjoy the celebrations at the hospital
D. he thought he might also miss the New Year’s Eve celebration
74. The point of the joke taken to explain “sick humour” is that ______.
A. no sooner was the man out of hospital than he had to go back in again
B. the man should not have said how much he hated hospitals
C. he would be unable to walk for the rest of his life
D. the man had not got a leg to stand on
75. What can you learn from this story?
A. On New Year’s Eve, the man was able to walk properly to the party.
B. At the party, he enjoyed himself but only drank a little.
C. He had to go to hospital again though he hated it.
D. The man got well soon because the doctor took good care of him.

As some cities start driving beggars from their major streets, some of the smarter ones have found a safer, more comfortable place to carry on—the Internet.
These “ web beggars” go online with a sad story, and send out emails asking for money, according to a recent Beijing News report. The paper published one example from a reader who had received it. It said: “ I’m from Chengdu. Dad died when I was a kid and Mum is seriously ill. My girlfriend has just dumped me. I am so depressed that I cannot leave home. Would you please help me with 10 yuan for a meal!” the sender left the name Li Dan and a bank account number.
A reporter later contacted Li Dan through , a Chinese Internet chat service. He said that he was 21 and had recently dropped out of college. “ I started begging via the Internet last December, just for fun.” But when I got the first 10 yuan in January, I decided to become a full-time________.”
Li said he knew about 10 other web beggars in Chengdu. They all stayed at home to write emails and could probably send over 1000 per day. They would exchange experience and thoughts over or beggar websites. “ Sometimes, I’m very lucky and get money the same day I send the email.” Li said. “ The largest amount I have received so far is 50 yuan.” Li collected 168 yun last month from all around the country, the paper said.
The story got some reaction from the public. Some saw it as a fresh idea but others suspected that it was just another form of cheating. But Li explained: “ Real web beggars identify themselves by posting an email address and name on the web.
In related news, Nanjing began to ban begging in eight of its major districts on Monday according to local media. That caused a heated debate about whether it violated beggars’ rights.
Most people supported the policy, repeating the old line that most beggars were not real beggars and that they annoy people constantly, according to a newspaper poll.
There have been previous media reports about Guangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai and Beijing having similar policies, especially in subways and some other public areas. Nanjing’s “ No Begging Zone” rule just about covers the entire city. That’s more controversial.

Is a Tutor Necessary?
More and more middle school students are having tutors at the weekend. There are two different viewpoints about it.
Some think it necessary. First of all, it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Secondly, it can strengthen what is learnt in class. Besides, it can learn a lot more. Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What’s more, the purpose of some family teachers is to make money.
In my opinion, whether a tutor is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you to have one. But be sure to choose a good and suitable teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.
