A
A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.
A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some stories. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once . Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced.
There are also people who are against fairy tales on the grounds that they are not objectively true;that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I found such people, I must say so peculiar that I do not know how to argue with them. If their cases were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girlfriend. No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.
56. The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is____________ .
A. repeated without any change B. treated as a joke
C. made some changes by the parents D. set in the present
57. The advantage claimed for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it_______.
A. makes them less fearful
B. develops their power of memory
C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of
D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs
58. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that_______.
A. They are full of imagination
B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth
C. they are not interesting
D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach
59. The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that_______ .
A. fairy stories are still being made up
B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales
C. people try to modernize old fairy stories
D. there is more concern(关心) for children’s fears nowadays

Webster and His Dictionary
When Webster was young, he was a teacher. But he quickly became tired of the books he used in class. They were all about the English people and places. Since he wanted books that would be interesting to American children, he wrote three books with many American examples.
Webster worked hard to change the spellings of American English. He wanted words to be spelled in the same way they were pronounced. For example, he thought the word “laugh” should be spelled “laf ”. And he tried many ways to ask people to help him to do this.
One day he walked into a print shop and gave the boy there a piece of paper. “Young man,” he said, “when you print any book in the future, please don’t spell the words like the English people do. For example, when you see these word: theatre, centre, colour, and labour, please always print them as theater, center, color, and labor.” The boy studied it and answered, “OK, but I must ask my boss first.”
With the money he made from his books, Webster could start his great work, which took him more than twenty years to finish. In 1828, the fist American English dictionary was born. And today, Webster’s dictionary is thought to be the most important American English dictionary in the whole world.

The film starts out as a normal day at a typical American high school. Friends chat in the dining room and boys play football.
But there’s a big surprise when the movie ends with two students going crazy in the school-shooting and killing people.
This is “Elephant”. Filmed in just 20 days, it stars real high school kids. American director Gus Van Sant had no ready made lines. The student actors made up their own dialogue, with Van Sant asking them to base their characters on their own lives.
Although it may not sound very high quality, the film won the Palme d’ Or for Best Film and the award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 25.
The film is based on the shootings at a high school in the US, where two boys killed 13 people and then themselves in 1999.
The title of the movie refers to the old expression about a problem that’s as hard to pass by as an elephant in the house.
The film takes a close look at a few hours in the lives of the victims(受害者) and the killers. It shows how high school is a different experience for everyone-fun and friendly, or hard and lonely.
In many ways, the two boys, who carry out the shooting, act like ordinary kids. They joke around with one boy’s mother as she serves them cakes and plays the piano.
But, there are hints(暗示) of the anger they feel inside. One of the boys is bullied(欺负) at school. The other plays violent video games. But Van Sant isn’t blaming their killings on either bullying or violent games. In fact, the film doesn’t offer any reason for why school violence happens.
“I didn’t want to explain anything. It’s up to the audience to draw their own conclusions,” said the 51-year-old director.
Do you know?
Cannes Film Festival began in the south of France in 1946. Cannes was chosen for the international festival because of its “sunny and beautiful location”. The festival looks at the artistic quality of world films as well as their commercial success.
China’s “Farewell my Concubine” won the Palme d’ Or in 1993, and “ To Live” brought Ge You the Best Actor title in 1994.

Cultural differences in business entertaining include problems such as whom one entertains and where, and how one entertains. In countries where status (地位) is important, it is not advisable to invite people of different statuses to the same dinner party. Americans will often invite people to their homes. However in some societies the home is considered too private, unworthy, or too small to serve as a proper place for business entertaining. In some countries there is a "help yourself" method of entertaining done in the home. This method does not work well when entertaining people whose culture teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food. In one instance, a Chinese guest went hungry all the evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too shy to take food after only being asked to do so once. In another case, an American woman executive(负责人) was being entertained in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English hostess was upset by the thought that she was not serving quickly enough.
As a general rule, a small gift from your home country is OK. A gift that is tied to the particular interest of the person is especially good. Gifts for children are also well received. Be careful that the "hometown" gift you are bringing to Singapore was not made in Hong Kong. Because many gifts carry symbolic meanings, it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural informant before selecting gifts. The giving of large gifts, or payments for special service, should only be carried out after talking with legal department in the home and host culture.
68. It is no good inviting people of different social positions to the same party in the country where
A. people don't pay any attention to your positions
B. people care much about their statuses
C. entertainment is important
D. entertainment is not advisable
69. The Chinese guest is taken for an example to show ______.
A. that offering food should not be made too early
B. a "help yourself" method does work well in this case
C. that accepting an offer of food should be made later
D. a "help yourself" method does not work well in some cases
70. The passage infers that American women like ______.
A. a "help yourself" method B. waiting to be served
C. a slow service D. cream and sugar
71 . ______ is especially proper.
A. A big gift B. Large payment as a gift
C . A small gift from one' s home D. A gift from Singapore

Humans not only love eating ice cream, they enjoy feeding it to their pets. Market studies show that two thirds of all dog owners give ice cream to their dogs. Unfortunately, says William Tyznik, an expert on animal nutrition(营养)at Ohio State University, ice cream is not good for dogs.“It has
milk sugar in it,” he says, “which dogs cannot digest very well.”
Bothered(打扰)by that knowledge but aware(having idea)of the desire of dog owners to please their companions, Tyznik invented a new frozen treat for dogs that, he says, is more nutritious than ice cream—and as much fun to eat. The product, called Frosty Paws, is made of a liquid byproduct(副产品)of cheese and milk with the sugar removed. Frosty Paws also contains refined soy flour, water, vegetable oil, vitamins and minerals. It took Tyznic, who has also invented a horse food(called Tizwhiz)and another dog food(named Tizbits),three years to perfect the Frosty Paws formula, and two attempts to commercialize it. After losing $25 000 trying to market the invention himself, Tyznik sold the rights to Associated Ice Cream of Westerville, Ohio, which makes the product and packages it in cups.
Tyznik claims that Frosty Paws has been tested extensively and that “dogs love it.” Of 1 400 dogs that have been offered the product, he says,89 percent took it on the first try. Three out of four preferred it to Milk-Bone or sausages. The product, which will be available in the ice-cream section of supermarkets, comes in packs of three or four cups, costing between $1.39 and$1.79.
What would happen if a human should mistake Frosty Paws for real ice cream? Nothing, says Tyznik. It’s harmless, but frankly, he says,I t won’t taste very good.

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
The habit of reading is one of the greatest resources of mankind, and we enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed.___________ is like a guest in the house, it must be treated with care. It must not suffer while under roof. You cannot leave it carelessly, you cannot mark it, you cannot turn down the pages, and you cannot use it as you like. And then, someday, you really ought to return it.
But your own books belong to you. Books are for use, not for show; you should own no book that you afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, wide open and face down. A good reason for marking favorite passage in books is that this practice enables you to remember more easily the significant sayings, to refer to them quickly, and then in later years, it is like visiting a forest where you once marked a trail. You have the pleasure of going over the old ground.
Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth. One should have one’s own bookshelves, which should not have doors, glass windows, or keys; they should be free and easy to get to the hand as well as to the eye.
There are of course no friends like living, breathing, physical men and women. My devotion to reading has never made me a recluse. How could it? Books are of the people, by the people, for the people. Literature is the immortal part of history, it is the best and most lasting part of personality. But book-friends have this advantage over living friends; you can enjoy the most truly noble society in the world whenever you want it. The great dead are beyond our physical reach, and the great living are usually almost as unreachable; as for our personal friends, we can not always see them. Perhaps they are asleep, or away on a journey. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with Shakespeare or Dumas, or other great men and there is no doubt that in these books you see these men at their best.
76. What’s the best title of the passage?(Please answer within 10 words.)

77. Which sentence in this passage can be replaced by the following one?
