In the late 1980’s there were an estimated 17 to 20 million illiterate adults in the United States, along with several million more whose ability to read was minimal.
The problem of extensive adult illiteracy first came to the attention of the United States government during World War I, when as many as 30 percent of the men enrolled into the armed forces were found to be either illiterate or barely able to read. In 1929, more than ten years after the war, President Herbert Hoover , created the United States Advisory Committee on National Illiteracy. With the beginning of the Great Depression the committee ceased to function, and little education was paid to the problem , until well after World War II .
Since the 1960s adult illiteracy has bemme a focus of government and private institutional attention. The damage caused by the problem is not only the individual deprivation among those who cannot read. The consequences for society and the economy are enormouse. The burden of.welfare and unemployment benefits is huge, and the cost of lost productivity are even greater. This increasing complexity of the emnomy and the need for specialized training in so many areas threaten to keep illiterates permanently out of the job market. Illiteracy tends to be passed from one generation to another, since adults who cannot read are unable to help their children learn to read.
To combat adult illiteracy President Lyncon Johnson started the Adult Basic Education Program in l964. In additior to government assisstance there are hundrds of privately funded programs for eaching adults. Thermometers are very useful tools. We use them to measure our temperature when we are sick, We use them to measure the temperature of the air. We also put them into the roast to see if it has finished cooking. Knowing how to read a thermometer can be very helpful.
A thermometer is made of a hollow tube with a bulb at the end filled with mercury . When the mercury gets hot it expands and moves up the tube; when the mercury mols down it contracts and moves down the tube.
In 1714 a famous German scientist named Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit marked where the mercury was in the tube when the thermometer was in a mixture of salt and snow. He called this point 0 degrees (0°). Then he marked the mercury height when the thermometer was in a man’s mouth. He then drew equally spaced marks between the two points. On this scale the temperature of ice that is about to melt is 32℉, and the temperature of water that has just begun to boil is 212℉. The F sthnds for Fahrenheit.
In 1742 a Swedish scientist, Celsius, made a different scale. He marked 0°as the freezing point of water and 100°as the boiling point, with l00 points between the two. This is the Centigrade scale, which we write as 42℃, for example. We use the Fahrenheit scale for weather, cooking and medicine; but in science we always use the Centigrade scale.
Here are some thermometers, with the mercury levels marked, and the temperatures given:

Attention to detail is something everyone can and should especially in a tight job market. Bob Crossley,a human-resources expert notices this in the job applications that comes across his desk every day. “It’s amazing how many candidates eliminate themselves.” he says.
“ Rgumes(简历)arrive with stains. Some candidates don’t bother to spell the company’s name correctly. Once I see a mistake, I eliminate the candidate,” Crossley concludes, “ If they cannot take care of these details, why should we trust them with a job?”
Can we pay too much attention to details?Absolutely. Perfecotionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. “ To keep from losing the forest for the trees,” says Charles Garfiellt, associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, “ we must constantly ask ourselves how the detail we’re working on fit into the larger picture, If they don’t, we should drop them and move to something else.”
Garfield compares this process to his work as a computer scientist at NASA. “ The Apollo II moon launch was slightly off-course 90 percent of the time,” says Garfield. “ But a successful landing was still likely because we the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to make adjustments as necessary.” Knowing where we want to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake.
Too often we believe what accounts for others’ success is some special secret or a lucky break(机遇). But rarely is success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow.
72. According to the passage, some job applicants were rejected .
A. because of their carelessness as shown in their failure to present a clean copy of a rsume
B. because of their inadequate education as shown in their poor spelling in writing a resume
C. because they failed to give a detailed description of their backgound in their applications

I had learned English for 6 years at school, and have kept on learning it since I left school. Now I can speak good English and type well. I enjoy singing and dancing. Last year I won the first prize in the competition for the spare time singers in the city.
Could you let me have a position in your hotel?

(Text 6)
W: Stan, do you have a minute?
M: Oh, hi, Cathy. Sure. What's up?
W: Well, I've been meaning to talk to you about the situation in the office.
M: I'm not in there very often. It's so noisy that I can't work.
W: That's exactly what I'm getting at. We're supposed to be able to do our preparation in that office, but have you noticed? Jack constantly has students coming in and get help with his course.
M: We can't really ask him to stop having students come in for help, can we?
W: No, of course not. But I'm not able to do my work and neither are you. I imagine it's the same for the others in the office.
M: Hmm, could we ask for a kind of meeting room? When we have to talk to students, we could go to the meeting room.
W: Good idea.
(Text7)
W: Are you busy tomorrow night? I'm going over to the Workers Club for volleyball if you'd like to come along.
M: Isn't that far away?
W: Not really. If you take the No. 3 bus, you can get there in ten minutes. And volleyball doesn't interest you, they've got a huge indoor swimming pool, a weight room, and indoor tracks. It's a great place to meet people.
M: Now that you mentioned it, it would be nice to get away from the computer center for a change, and I really should get some more exercise. Working up a sweat in a ball game or the weight room would be nice. I've got so fat.
W: Look at me-You're not the only one. In high school I had a lot more time to do sports activities. Now what little spare time you have must be used in doing exercise. At least the club is open until 12 pm.
M: I guess it's worth a visit. Did you say you’re going tomorrow night?
W: Yeah.
M: OK, I'll come, too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight, and we'll catch the bus there.
W: Sure, see you then.
(Text8)
M: Hi, Jeanie. Why have you come to school an hour early?
W: I wanted to get a front row seat and review one more time before the test. Why are you here so early, Jack?
M: I get out of my car here this time every day. You seem to be nervous about your lessons. Have you finished your review?
W: I've only been studying night and day for the last week. If I don't get an A in this class, I won't get the support of my country. Why do you seem so calm?
M: This class is really just a review for me. I've been learning it for two years.
W: That's lucky for you.
M: Jeanie, can you guess what the test will be like? Will it be difficult?
W: I hope not. But I'm still worried about it.
M: Well, cheer up. Hope for good luck.
W: Thanks for wishing me luck.
(Text 9)
W: Robert, you play the guitar, don't you?
M: I used to. But I haven't played it for quite some time. I don't really have time these days with all my studies. Why do you ask?
W: I’m trying to organize a group to play at some parties on weekends. We still need a guitar player.
M: Well, I don't know. But your idea sounds fun to me.
W: Oh, it will be. I'm more or less in charge of things, so if you want to give it a try, you’re in. It's as easy as that. Besides, it's a great chance to get out and meet people.
M: But I told you I haven't practiced for a long time. I don't know if I remember any songs I used to play.
W: Don't worry about it. I just thought I'd ask you to try and join us sometime when we were practicing. We'll be practicing for a few months before we give performances.
M: OK, I'll have a try.
W: I'm sure you can do it. And it will be fun, too.
(Text 10)
Well, a mixed picture over the next few days. Today in Britain, very wet and windy. You can see from the satellite picture that the highest temperatures, as they so often are, are in the southern parts of Europe, where it's also quite dry. It's going to be quite cold over northwestern parts of Europe it will be rainy but in the south there will be the best of the sunshine. And pretty good but cool in the eastern parts of Europe, too.
Now let’s look at tomorrow’s weather. It will be very much the same in the south except that the rain is starting to push up into the northern parts. It will stay fine in eastern Europe. But still wet and windy in many northwestern parts, and a bit cool, too.
