If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius (天才), they will cause great damage to him. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parents’ expectations can cause great damage to children.

If women are mercilessly cheated year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion; they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. Women usually stand in front of a wardrobe full of clothes, announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck – lines are lowered or raised, and so on. YC
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or deliberately picking her way through deep snow in high – heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool – headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to dross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let along master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give – and – take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

As the basic building materials of communication, words communicate meaning, but as we have seen, the meanings of words are very much influenced by culture. Meaning is in the person, not in the word, as each person is the product of a particular culture that passes on shared and appropriate meanings. Thus, if we want to learn to communicate well in a foreign language, we must understand the culture that gives that language meaning. Culture gives meaning and provides the context for communication, and the ability to communicate allows us to act out our cultural values and to share our language and our culture.
But our own native language and culture are so much a part of us that we take them for granted. When we travel to another country, it’s as if we carry along with our passports, we view the new environment using our own culture as the standard, and although unintentional, our ways of thinking and acting often get in the way of our understanding other languages and cultures. The ability and willingness to change lenses (视角) when we look at a different culture is both the cure and the prevention for such cultural blindness. Studying a new language provides the opportunity to practices changing lenses when we also learn the context or the culture to which it belongs.

How time flies! The 2007 National University Entrance Examination is only eight months away from now. As we know, there will be some changes in the English examination. Just to give you an example of the vocabulary – students are expected to have a command of more than three thousand English words, which almost doubles in the past.
Words are the basis of the language, so without enough English words, we have much difficulty in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Having a large vocabulary is very important and necessary.
In the past I didn’t pay much attention to word study, especially to word spelling, thinking there is no word test. And now I come to know the importance of words. I will spend more time studying them. In addition, I will strengthen the intensive reading, studying the words in the contexts to improve my English.
