第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

Years ago while lying in my hammock(吊床)and drinking JD from the bottle, I noticed my dog dragging something under the fence. Upon inspection, to my disappointment, I realized it was the next door neighbor’s 10 – year – old daughter’s rabbit. For years I had watched her come home from school and head straight out to its cage, free it and play with it in the yard. I knew that day would be no different and fearing for our dog, I had to think fast.

The rabbit was quite dirty, as if it had put up quite a struggle, so I washed it, combed it with the dog brush and blew it dry with the leaf blower. Upon finishing its grooming I jumped the fence and replaced it back in its cage hoping its death would be written off as “natural caused”.

Back to the hammock and JD. Within the hour the neighbor’s Volvo pulled in as usual and out popped the little girl, and as usual she headed straight for the cage. Only this time she stopped about six feet away and screamed: “D—A—D—D—Y!!!”.

Her father, panic stricken, stood looking at the cage. Being the good neighbor that I am, I rushed to fence and asked if there was anything I could do.

A traveler, after losing his way in the mountain, took refuge for the night in a cave. He saw at once that another had preceded(先于) him and was now warming himself before a fire of sticks and leaves. When the traveler entered, the other man said, “I’m an untouchable(member of the lowest class in India). Be careful not to stumble and fall against me.”

The traveler sat on the other side of the fire watching his companion. He wondered what differences made one of them an honorable man and the other a homeless one. Not seeing any great physical difference between them, he thought perhaps the solution lay in another field. He said, “Tell me, do you feel hate and joy and love, as I do? Are you capable of feeling hope and jealousy and regret?”

“Yes.” said the untouchable, “I feel all those things. I also feel shame, envy, sorrow and pity.”

And so the two men talked. They tried to discover some differences between them but did not succeed. Then the traveler said, “As far as I can see, we are very much alike. and added, “Do you know why you’re an untouchable and I am not?”

“No.” said the other, “I only know I was born an untouchable of parents who were like myself.”

There was a long silence while the two men examined each other across the fire. Finally the traveler said, “I wonder what would happen if I touched you.”

The eyes of the traveler widened at his own audacity(胆识), and he said, “You know-I’m going to touch you and find out.” The homeless fellow drew back against the wall and covered his eyes. The traveler stretched out his arms and touched the untouchable. After a time the homeless fellow asked in a frightened voice, “Did the mountain shake? Did the river dry up? Self-employed private physicians who charge a fee for each patient's visit are the foundations of medical practice in the United States. Most physicians have a contract relationship with one or more hospitals in the community. They send their patients to this hospital, which usually charges patients according to the number of days they stay and their use of the facilities(operating room, tests, medicines, etc.).Some hospitals belong to a city,a state,or in the case of veterans' hospitals,a federal government agency.Others are operated by religious orders(教会)or other non-profit groups.

Some medical doctors are on salary. Salaried physicians may work as hospital staff members,or residents, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools,be hired by corporations to care for their workers or work for the federal government's Public Health Service.

Physicians are among the best paid professionals in the United States. In the 1980s,it was not uncommon for medical doctors to earn in- comes of more than $100,000a year.Specialists, particularly surgeons, might earn several times that amount.Physicians list many reasons why they deserve to be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a physician in the United States. Most would-be physicians first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000a year at one of the best private institutions.Prospective physicians then attend medical school for four years.Tuition alone can exceed $10,000a year.By the time they have obtained their medical degrees, many young physicians are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency(实习阶段)in a hospital, the first year as an apprentice physician. The hours are long and the pay is relatively low.

Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too.Sometimes several physicians will decide to establish a group practice,so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These physicians also take care of each other's patients in emergencies.

C.Ten years. D.About twelve years.

66.Sometimes, several physicians set up a group medical practice mainly because______.

A.there are so many patients that it is difficult for one physician to take care all of them

B.they can take turns to work long hours

C.facilities may be too much of a burden for one physician to shoulder

Moreover, what was special about this case was that the day before the 400 were fired, they all received from their boss a gift―the book “Who Moved My Cheese?”

As the world watched the twin towers of the World Trade Center come under attack, a common phrase was repeated: “It looks like a movie.”

But this time there was no superman to save the people or the famous building. The attack destroyed one of the world's highest skyscrapers and left 5,000 people dead or missing.

Movie fans have become used to such events after years of Hollywood films showing disasters, terrorism and danger. The Empire State Building, the White House, New York City and even the American president himself have all been threatened by terrorist attacks in these exciting films.

The film “True Lies”, released in 1994, is considered to be a good example of this kind of

movie. The special effects, including explosions and missiles, make the action look like a real thing. “Independence Day” in 1996 took this type of movie one step further by blowing up the White House. This science fiction movie is about a war between human beings and aliens from another planet. In the movie, the World Trade Center towers are destroyed.

Violence has become a major part of Hollywood movies. And this is what people enjoy. Soon after the attacks, many famous film companies stopped the planned releases of some of their new movies, especially if their films showed terrorist attacks or plane crashes. “Swordfish” was top of the American box office in June. But the movie's story was frighteningly similar to the Sept. 11 disaster. The film would have been stopped in American and British cinemas after the attack.      But it's unlikely that Hollywood will stay quiet for long. It is already waiting for the feeling in America to calm down.

72. Which word or phrase can replace “blow up” in Paragraph 4? _ .

A. burn B. explode C. pull down D. set fire to

73. What is the main subject of the newspaper article?   ____.

A. The relationship between the Sept. 11 attack and Hollywood films. B. The effect of the Sept. 11 attack and Hollywood films. C. The response Hollywood made to the Sept. 11 attack.                    D. The result of Hollywood films showing violence and disasters.

74. Which of the following is TRUE? .

A. Hollywood made a lot of money out of the film “Swordfish” in June.            B. Hollywood stopped making films showing terrorism and disasters after the Sept. 11 attack.

C. “Swordfish” was not allowed to be shown after the Sept. 11 attack.              D. The World Trade Center was destroyed because no superman came to save it.

75. From this article we know that .

A. Hollywood is a film making center making films of violence and disasters              B. too many Hollywood films showing terrorism and disasters resulted in the Sept. 11 attack.

C. people who were used to the Hollywood films were not shocked at the Sept. 11 attack       D. in fact, the Sept. 11 attack had nothing to do with Hollywood films

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

 Try physical activity

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.

 Take care of yourself

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you’re not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

  Make time for yourself

Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to your overall well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

Make a list of things to do.

Stress can result form disorganization and a feeling that “there’s so much to do, and not enough tome”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then______________, checking off each task as it is completed. Set out to do the most important tasks first.

Dear editor:

In the countryside, a lot of children are leaving school for various reasons. Some families

are too poor to send their children to school. So children have to earn money to support their

families. Some parents think it useless to send their children to school. They would rather let

their children stay at home. Some of the children aren't interested in their lessons so they

don't like to go to school. I feel worried about this. I think every child should have the chance

to go to school. We should pay more attention to the education of children for they will play an

important part in our socialist construction in the future. Ways must be found to prevent children from leaving off their studies.
