I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class.”
“The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she 39 . I smiled back and headed for class.” So ended my story.

For shopoholics, the post-Christmas period means only one thing — sales! Across the country, prices are reducing sharply on clothing, electronics, home furnishings and more, but London is the place for serious shopping, and you can certainly pick up some amazing bargains.
The sales start on Boxing Day — 26th December, and continue for the month of January, but the keenest bargain hunters get there early to be first through the doors. In Oxford Street queues formed outside shops ahead of pre-dawn openings for the start of their sales. At Brent Cross, in north London, more than 1,000 people were queuing at 3.30 am for the ‘Next’ clothing store’s sale which began at 4 am. Some eager individuals even camped outside the shops to be first in the line.
Consumers who hit the shops were rewarded with discounts of as much as 80% as department stores joined the sales frenzy. The shops are absolutely crowded as the sales get into full swing, with more than half a million people gathering on London’s West End.
Famous sales include the biggest, most popular shops such as Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty and John Lewis. Department stores are always a good bet — you’re likely to find everything you need under one roof, including much-needed food and drinks!
It’s a good time to stock up on cheap gadgets, and there’s no better time to invest in some designer clothes.
Some people are taking their partners shopping with them, and buying their Christmas presents in the sale — a practical but unromantic way of making sure you get the gift you really want. For a less exciting but less stressful shopping experience, online sellers are also getting in on the act with January sales of their own.
The most organized of all are those who are already doing their present shopping for next Christmas, in the January sales!

American schoolchildren often wear uniforms if they attend religious or other private schools. Most public schools do not require uniforms. But over the last ten years or so, more of them have moved in that direction, including high schools. Another option is that students may just have to dress alike — for example, white shirts and dark colored pants or skirts. Even schools that do not require uniforms generally have a dress rule about what they consider acceptable. Schools commonly forbid clothing that shows images or words causing displeasure, or simply too much skin. Hats may be forbidden because, for example, different colors may be connected with bad guys.
Some parents like the idea of uniforms. Some say it means they do not have to spend much on clothing for their kids. Others, though, argue that uniforms represent an unnecessary cost.
There are also debates about whether uniforms or other dress rules go against civil rights. Students and parents have taken legal action against school dress requirements. At the beginning of this July, a middle school was asked to stop its dress rule unless families have a way out of it. The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California brought the case for the families of several students who had been punished by the school. Most attention centered on a girl who wore socks with the Tigger character from Winnie the Pooh. The school said its clothing policy, including no pictures of any kind, was needed to control a growing problem with gangs. The families argued that the policy went against free speech rights as protected by the United States and California constitutions (宪法).
The United States Supreme Court says student expression is protected as long as it does not harm the work and the rule of a school. But some educators believe dressing alike helps improve student learning. They believe that uniforms help create a sense of unity and reduce the risk of fights. They also say uniforms make it easier for security reasons to tell if someone belongs to the school or not.
46.According to the passage there is a trend in the USA that ______.

Not sure of what to say or how to say it? Here are some basic guidelines. All you’ll be doing, as a reader, is telling other readers a little bit about the story and what you think of it, in your own words. Don’t be harshly negative in your comments. You can say what you have to say — praising the book or pointing out its imperfection — without either false enthusiasm or abuse.
PLEASE remember that not everyone will have read the whole book or know everything about the author that is being discussed. If you MUST discuss critical plot information that could potentially spoil the ending of the book for someone (e.g., if somebody in the book dies), PLEASE WARN other community members by noting it at the top of your posting.
The format requirements are simple. There should only be one review per book; please check to see if the book has already been reviewed before posting your own. Add a new discussion for each new book, and give it a title in the following format: Author Last Name, Author First Name: “Title of Book”. Limit your review to about 300 words, and use paragraphs to break up large blocks of text by leaving an extra blank line. At the beginning of the review, give:
· the title of the book
· the author
· the publisher
· the year of publication, and
· the price.
Browse this section for examples. If you have a comment on any of the reviews, feel free to post them as part of that discussion. That’s it. Happy reading — and reviewing! (Note: All material posted becomes the property of Newfront. Newfront reserves the right to edit or remove any material.)

I start to wonder what else had changed since I’d been gone. My parents are in an awkward transition, wondering how to treat me now. They wrestle with whether to treat me—still their daughter—as one of them, an adult, or as the child they feel they sent away months earlier.
I run into two of my best friends from high school; we stare at each other, expressionless. We ask the simple questions and give simple answers. It’s as if we have nothing to say to each other. I wonder how things have changed so much in such a small amount of time. We used to laugh and promise that no matter how far away we were, our love for each other would never change. Their interests don’t interest me anymore, and I find myself unable to relate my life to theirs.
I had been so excited to come home, but now I just look at it all and wonder: Is it me?
Why hadn’t the world stood still here while I was gone? My room isn’t the same, my friends and I don’t share the same bond, and my parents don’t know how to treat me—or who I am, for that matter.
I get back to school feeling half-fulfilled, but not disappointed. I sit up in my bed in my dorm room, surrounded by my pictures, dolls. As I wonder what has happened, I realize that I can’t expect the world to stand still and move forward at the same time. I can’t change and expect that things at home will stay the same. I have to find comfort in what has changed and what is new; keep the memories, but live in the present.
A few weeks later, I’m packing again, this time for winter break. My mom meets me at the curb. I have come home accepting the changes, not only in my surroundings, but most of all in me.

书面表达
Nowadays, people in China are increasingly interested in celebrating foreign festivals, especially those western festivals.
Some people say celebrating Christmas or Valentine’s Day is just another way of recreation, nothing serious. Other people consider it as a fashion act, showing they are not “out”, and they also think western culture reveals much romance.
The arising of celebrating foreign festivals clearly has something to do with the advancement of China’s economy. In my point of view, Christmas and other festivals celebrated in China have difference from the origin. They have lost their religious background and turned into a big occasion to have fun and enjoy life. Foreign festivals in China are more like carnivals giving people pleasure and enjoyment. They give people opportunities to relax and show appreciation and gratefulness.
As society develops, many people in China, especially young people, celebrate more and more foreign festivals instead of our traditional festivals. They believe it is cool or fashionable. At the same time, they consider celebrating China’s festivals as out-dated.
I don’t think this is good for younger generations or for our country. Firstly, traditional festivals are an important part of China’s cultural heritage. They are unique and are precious treasures from our ancestors. If we don’t keep them, we will lose our own cultural characteristics. Secondly, our traditional festivals are, in fact, just as cool as a lot of foreign festivals. As our country becomes stronger, the world will learn much more about our culture and our festivals, just like our language becomes more and more popular in other countries.
