Although 48  people can't make us happy, special places and people might be 49 to the state of mind, and the celebration and love comes from   50 . The challenge is to find it there -- a state of mind, a positive attitude. It's 51  to use a holiday as an excuse to be sad or nervous. I've been there. Our challenge is to celebrate every day as 52  . Life is a precious 53 , whether we're in jail or not. I'm 54  a celebration every day this year --a celebration of  55 .

The Iroquois were unique among Native Americans, not only because of the strength and persistence of their alliance (结盟) but also because of the role played by the older women in power of each village. These women chose its chief and could either start wars by calling for the capture (俘获) of prisoners to replace dead relatives or stop them by refusing to supply soldiers with necessary food. Before the arrival of Europeans, the Iroquois started wars mainly to acquire captives (俘虏) to restore their population. Contact with foreign traders brought destroying disease as early as 1633 and thus made the need for captives stronger. At the same time, the Europeans' coming created an economic eagerness for war: the desire to control the fur trade and gain access to European goods without any prevention. The war with the Hurons in the 1640s was but the first of a series of conflicts with other tribes known as the Beaver Wars, in which the Iroquois fought desperately to keep a leading position in the trade. In the mid-1670s, just when they were achieving their goal, the French stepped in; an Iroquois victory would have destroyed France's plans to trade directly with the Indians of the Great Lakes and Mississippi valley. Over the next twenty years the French made repeated attacks on Iroquois villages. The English offered

little help other than weapons to their trading partners and impractical alliance. Their people and resources were reduced by constant wars. The Iroquois in 1701 signed an agreement with France, England, and their Indian neighbors. For the next half-century they kept their power through trade and skilled diplomacy (外交) rather than wars.

 56. According to the passage, the Iroquois fought against

   A. the English army only        B, other Indian tribes only

    C. other Indian tribes and the French D. the French, English, and other Indian tribes

 57. After reading this passage, we may conclude that in Native American tribes, the older Iroquois women

   A. were the leaders of their groups B. did not engage in war at all

   C. held much economic power D. had important political influence

58. The passage states that after the Europeans arrived, the Iroquois fought mainly to

A. control the fur trade        B. prove their strength and courage

C. acquire land D. fight off the Europeans

59. According to the passage, after 1701 the Iroquois remained powerful partly because of their

  A. skills at war B. land and trade

  C. political alliances          D. diplomatic skills

                B

What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate's need to study for an exam may take priority (优先) over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the purpose of your romantic interest may have other choices.

In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our point of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not always prevail -- other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merits (advantages) of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves.

Some people, however, are against the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome approach to their lives. In contrast, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable---to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be moral or immoral, selfless or selfish, inspiring or discouraging. Persuaders may enlighten our minds or trouble us greatly. Moral persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, a necessary part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.

Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is a need to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the basic principle of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

60. What is the main idea of this passage?

 A. How we can live better among competing interests.

 B. When we persuade, we want to influence others.

 C. Persuasion is both good and bad, and it is all around us.

 D. Persuasion is necessary to society and is built into our government.

61. In this passage, to prevail means to

 A. win B. persuade    speak C. D. believe

62. Some people disagree to persuasion because they think it is

 A. dangerous to the Constitution B. difficult to do properly

 C. uncomfortable and unacceptable D. immoral or selfish

63. In the author's opinion, students in modern times should

 A. refuse all persuasion because persuasion may trouble or hurt them

 B. accept all persuasion because persuasion may made them cleverer

 C. learn to practice persuasion and resist it as well

 D. learn persuasion because it is the right of America political system

               C

PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week I visited the troops at Charleston Air Force Base. These fine men and women are serving bravely to protect our country against dangerous enemies. The terrorist network that struck America on September the 11th wants to strike our country again. To stop them, our armies, law departments, and intelligence professionals need the best possible information about who the terrorists are, where they are, and what they are planning.

One of the most important ways we can gather that information is by monitoring (监控) terrorist communication. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act -- also known as EISA -- provides an important legal foundation that allows our intelligence community to collect this information while protecting the civil freedom of Americans. But this important law was written in 1978, and it dealt with the technologies of that time. This law is badly out. of date-and our government must act to modernize it.

To fix this problem, my Administration has suggested a bill that would modernize the FISA. It includes four key reforms. First, it brings FISA up to date with the changes in communications technology that has taken place over the past three decades. Second, it seeks to restore FISA to its original focus on protecting the private interests of people inside the United States. Third, it allows the government to work more efficiently. And fourth, it will make administrative processes more efficient so our intelligence community can gather foreign intelligence more quickly and more effectively.

   Thank you for listening.

64. What is the most important in protecting the country according to President?

   A. To have fine men and women serving bravely.

   B. To enforce law about America's information safety.

   C. To destroy the terrorists' network of communication.

   D. To gather the best possible information about terrorists.

65. Why must the US government modernize FLSA?

   A. Because it allows the intelligence community to collect information.

   B. Because it is out of date and has to be updated.

   C. Because it protects the country and the civil freedom of Americans.

   D. Because it provides a critical legal foundation.

66. How can we most probably find this speech?

   A. By visiting Charleston Air Force Base ourselves.

   B. By studying FISA in the US government offices.

   C. By watching the News Report on the TV program.

   D. By reading a tour--guide booklet to the President Office.

67. Which of the following could be the best title?

   A. Modernizing FISA Is Important B~ How to Modernize America's FISA

   C. President's Visit to Air Force Base D. President's Speech--Modernizing FISA

                  D

Your beliefs are very powerful and have the power to create or to destroy your life. In most cases, whatever you believe is what you will become. If you believe that you are a loser, that you never get a breakthrough in life, and that you can't accomplish (succeed in doing) anything, these things will be your reality. Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you hope to do, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs, and that is how you finally control your life. This is a very important point. So how do you develop beliefs that will empower you?

Many of our beliefs come from our environment, the world we live in on a daily basis. If your environment is limiting your beliefs, then work very hard on changing it. If you are  constantly around people who are negative and limiting, find other people to hang out with and get around positive, successful people.

Beliefs also come from past experiences. That is why it is so important to experience success on a regular basis. Set small achievable goals, and then try your best to reach them. "I will finish this project by early afternoon. ~ "I will make six calls on the phone in the next hour." "I will exercise 20 minutes tonight." When you start to experience success, then you start to believe in success, and that leads to more and bigger successes.

Beliefs come from knowledge. The more you learn, the more things you will know to be possible. Always take the advantage of opportunities to learn something new. It will bring new possibilities into your beliefs and your life.

Most importantly, you can develop new beliefs by setting and visualizing (设想) goals for your life. Define your goals clearly. Then in your mind, see yourself achieving them in all of their sensory details. Mentally live the experience, see the sights, hear the sounds, smell the aroma, and feel the feelings. The beliefs formed in this way will lead you to their reality.

68. In the author's opinion, your life depends on

   A. your environment where you live    B. your experiences

   C. your knowledge and opportunities D. your beliefs

69. Which of the following statements is true?

   A. You should try your best to help your negative people around you.

   B. You should try to achieve small success to believe in success first.

C. The more knowledge you learn, the more you will control your life.

D.You should stick to your own beliefs without changing.

70.According to the passage, what is the most important about your beliefs?

A.To imagine your success with your senses.

B.To make efforts to achieve them.

  C. To learn as much knowledge as possible.

  D. To try to experience success regularly.

71. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

  (①-----⑤stand for "Paragraph 1----Paragraph 5")

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite skilled.

If you say to your children "I'm sorry I got angry with you, but... ", what follows that "but” can give the apology with ineffectiveness. "I had a bad day" or -Your noise was giving me a headache" leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he/she should be apologizing for his/her bad behavior instead of expecting an apology.

Another, method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I'm sorry you’re upset”. This suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

Then there is a general way---an all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful, and which suggests the person who is apologizing promises never to do anything hurtful again. Saying "I'm useless as a parent" does not help a person to get any specific improvement.

: These pretended-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength.

But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition (痛悔), children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old child might Help in, understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old child might need, reminding that ruining other children's expectations can require an apology. A twelve-Year~old child might need to be shown that taking the biscuit tin at home without asking permission is ,acceptable, but that borrowing a parent's clothes without permission is not.

72. If a mother adds "but" to an apology,.

   A. she doesn't feel that she should have apologized

   B. the child may feel that he owes her an apology

   C. the child may find the apology easier to accept

   D. she does not realize that the child has been hurt

 73. According to the author, saying "I'm sorry you're upset" most probably means .

   A. YOU have good reason to get upset B.. I'm at fault for making you really upset

C.I apologize for hurting your feelings D. I know you're upset, but it's not my fault

 74. From the last paragraph we learn that in teaching children to say sorry,

   A. the difficulties involved should be ignored

   B. parents should be patient and thoughtful

   C. parents need to set them a good example

   D. their ages should be taken into consideration

 75. It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is __

   A. too difficult to do properly      B. not as simple as it seems for us

   C. a sign of better social communication D. not necessary among family members
